“Speechless in Seattle”

That’s how the legions of Seahawks fans became seconds after the ball left Russell Wilson’s hands with the game on the line last Sunday; speechless in Seattle!malcolm-butler-intercepts-russell-wilson-super-bowl

It was the same on the field as well only it was Pete Carroll and OC Darrell Bevell who were left stunned, not Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan…

By now all the excuses, interviews, and yes, even conspiracy theories have been bandied about the media but even with what the press has reported, Seattle fans, those who bet on the game, and even all fans of the game of football (Patriots excluded), are still speechless. Yes, conspiracy theories!!

Did you hear the one about Pete Carroll not wanting to let Marshawn Lynch run the ball in and get all the accolades in addition to an MVP award because of his tenuos relationship with the media so he tried to give all the attention and possible glory on Russell Wilson instead? Yep! Can’t make this up!

Bottom line is this. If Bevell, who ultimately called the passing play, did indeed choose to ‘save a timeout’ by having Wilson throw a pass, then why not throw it away from traffic and not into it; somewhere down either sideline? As fleet of foot as Wilson is, why not have him roll out and if no one is open then either throw it away so the clock stops, or try running the rock in himself?

I know, sounds like a whole heap of Tuesday morning quarterbacking, but at least some good has come out of all the controversy. You see while all the talk has been about “the Call” over the past several days, less talk is taking place over deflate-a-gate, putting New England in a win-win situation. Game-Set-Match Deflateriots! Which, by the way, doesn’t help all those in Seattle who are still speechless…

….and the winner of Super Bowl XLIX is…The “DE-FLATERIOTS!”

Haven’t heard enough ranting and yapping over today’s big game? Good! Then here’s possibly the last few words you will hear about “The Game”….

First, a disclaimer; we are not fans of either New England or Seattle and therefore have no vested interest in the outcome of today’s game. Having said that, and strictly as a sports site, we have selected the New England De-Flateriots as today’s winners of the Super Bowl. No matter how many pounds of pressure are in the footballs at Sunday’s game, they just have such an abundance of more talent and experience; like Brady & Belichick for starters.

Any of those who witnessed the implosion of the Green Bay Packers in their championship game against the Seahawks a few weeks ago, will have come away feeling that luck was truly on Seattle’s side that afternoon. Can history repeat itself? Sure! However, luck can also run out. Just ask any gambler at the tables in Vegas. And besides, when you play New England, you better have more than luck on your side!

The Pats have found themselves in quite a precarious situation. In the court of public opinion, they have been found guilty of “ball-tampering”, of sorts. They lose this game and there will be those who will say it’s because of the tightened security on the field with respect to the air pressure of said footballs. Given “spygate” and now “deflategate”, should the Pats win, there will be the naysayers who will believe that Bill Belicheat has found yet a new angle, a new edge if you will with which to gain the ‘ultimate victory’; one that we’ll all be reading about in the days and weeks following the game.

In the end, like most sports enthusiasts, we do not want to see a lopsided contest like we have sat through so many times in the past. Unfortunately, we think we could be in for just that kind of game today in Arizona. Our prediction: Pats 37 ‘Hawks 21

Fantasy Football 2014: Top 5 Defense & Special Teams

The question every season for fantasy owners when it comes to Defense and Special Teams, is not so much WHO to select but WHEN. Our rule of thumb is to not pick your DST until the last 2-3 rounds of your draft. Yes, there are exceptions to every rule. For example the size of your league, the amount of DSTs allowed in that league, and the scoring system found in your settings. However, for the most part, the longer you can wait the better. We have listed our top five Defense and Special Teams which includes one sleeper for you to consider.

1. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS- No surprise here as the ‘Hawks allowed the fewest points and yards per game last year and should repeat in those categories this season even with the losses of two key defensive players in Clinton McDonald and Chris Clemons. They led the NFL in interceptions with 28 and have the noisiest stadium in the league. Although they are our first selection, the next team could very well be a number one choice as well.

2. SAN FRANCISCO 49ers- Patrick Willis and Justin Smith are the ‘bookends’ to the 49ers staunch defense which could end the year surpassing the Seahawks in total team defense like they did in 2012. Even though linebacker NaVorro Bowman’s injury will keep him sidelined for the first week or two of this season, there is still enough ammunition left on defense for the Niners to create havoc for their opponents.

3. CAROLINA PANTHERS- Very quietly, the Panthers have become one of the best kept secrets in total team defense in the NFL. They boast the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year in Linebacker Luke Kuechly and ended the season with 60 sacks, most in the league. The ‘Cats finished second in both points allowed and yards per game, right behind the league-leading Seattle Seahawks. This well-coached group just needs a better offense to be included in Super Bowl banter.

4. ARIZONA CARDINALS- This team was just on the south side of eliteness finishing the season in 2013 at a respectable 10-6. Their defense ranked sixth in sacks with 47, 3 more than the Seahawks, while their top rated secondary garnered 20 interceptions. The Cardinals also tallied 5 defensive touchdowns , one more than Seattle.

5. DENVER BRONCOS- *Sleeper Pick* We like what the Broncos did in the off-season adding free-agents DeMarcus Ware from the Cowboys and Agib Talib from the Patriots to help shore up their underachieving defense. Through suspensions and injuries to players like pass rushing Pro Bowler Von Miller, the Broncos defense, if you’ll pardon the pun, really took a hit last season. However, with Denver’s acquisitions and a completely healthy Von Miller, this defense could even finish in the top five this season.
