“Speechless in Seattle”

That’s how the legions of Seahawks fans became seconds after the ball left Russell Wilson’s hands with the game on the line last Sunday; speechless in Seattle!malcolm-butler-intercepts-russell-wilson-super-bowl

It was the same on the field as well only it was Pete Carroll and OC Darrell Bevell who were left stunned, not Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan…

By now all the excuses, interviews, and yes, even conspiracy theories have been bandied about the media but even with what the press has reported, Seattle fans, those who bet on the game, and even all fans of the game of football (Patriots excluded), are still speechless. Yes, conspiracy theories!!

Did you hear the one about Pete Carroll not wanting to let Marshawn Lynch run the ball in and get all the accolades in addition to an MVP award because of his tenuos relationship with the media so he tried to give all the attention and possible glory on Russell Wilson instead? Yep! Can’t make this up!

Bottom line is this. If Bevell, who ultimately called the passing play, did indeed choose to ‘save a timeout’ by having Wilson throw a pass, then why not throw it away from traffic and not into it; somewhere down either sideline? As fleet of foot as Wilson is, why not have him roll out and if no one is open then either throw it away so the clock stops, or try running the rock in himself?

I know, sounds like a whole heap of Tuesday morning quarterbacking, but at least some good has come out of all the controversy. You see while all the talk has been about “the Call” over the past several days, less talk is taking place over deflate-a-gate, putting New England in a win-win situation. Game-Set-Match Deflateriots! Which, by the way, doesn’t help all those in Seattle who are still speechless…

The Furnace’s 2014 Super Bowl pick: It Peys to be the best!

Now that we have heard most of the ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ surrounding this title game from every reporter and player on the planet, we decided it was high time to announce our pick for the Big Game.DownloadedFileWe will try not to go on about information you have probably already heard numerous times, all with different spins. Mainly we  have heard that Seattle has the best defense in the league and usually the better defensive team will beat a good offensive team most of the time. Right? Not so fast…

The Broncos defense in the last four games, the most important ones of the season to date, has been pretty outstanding and needs to be highlighted. In a capsulated form, here is what the Broncos defense has done; In the first 14 games of the season Denver allowed an average of 105.4 rushing yards and 266.1 passing yards per game. In the last four those numbers have been greatly reduced to 70 yards rushing and 198.5 passing. If all you give up is 70 rushing yards a game then the team’s offense you’re facing is not going to be on the field that often.

Nor will they score as many points. Consider this; After Denver gave up an average of 26.6 points per game during those first 14 games, the defense only allowed 15 points over the last four. 15 points! How many teams in the NFL won by only scoring 15 points all game this season? Or any season?

Secondly, consider that the Broncos have kept the ball for 35 minutes in this year’s playoffs! That’s after they finished the regular season 10th in the league at 30:35. (The Seahawks, for those curiosity seekers out there, finished 17th at 29.57)

Lastly, in case anyone reading this has spent the last four+ months on Pluto, this is Peyton Manning’s year! Period! I mean how many more records and accolades does he have to garner this season to have what some are already saying is the best one, statistically, that any quarterback has ever had! Not taking anything away from second year phenom Russell Wilson as he has already won 29 games in his first two years in the league, but if Peyton Manning is to be given the credit that his distinguished career has brought him, then you would think that with his talent and those five top tier receivers at his disposal, he should better Wilson on Sunday. I mean Richard Sherman, arguably one of the best at what he does in the league, cannot cover all five…

NFL 2013: Week #2-The Furnace’s Five Best Bets

Our first week’s picks were merely a pedestrian 3-2 as Week one in the NFL usually brings more than its share of ‘surprises’. Let’s see if we can improve on that number as we list Week 2’s Best Bets:

1. GIANTS over the Broncos- At the outset, this game has some historical notoriety: It’s the first time in NFL history that two quarterbacks who threw for 400+ yards in the previous week’s games are facing each other in the very next game. That being said, we should be in for a fairly high scoring affair. We’re giving the edge to the ‘dogs in this one because there are too many intangibles going in their favor. Eli has never beaten his brother and this will be their third and probably final meeting unless they should miraculously meet in the Super Bowl. The prospect of beginning the season at 0-2 provides more incentive for Eli and motivation for the G-Men to ‘put it all out on the field’ this Sunday. Plus it’s the Giants home opener!

EAGLES over the Chargers- The Chargers lost in a heartbreaker to the Texans this past Monday night and with the short week and long trip East to Philadelphia, this all might be too much for them to handle. There is also Chip Kelley’s relentless offensive attack for the Bolts to deal with. (Just ask the Redskins about it…) Clearly, they will need to stop or at best slow down LeSean McCoy who put up 184 rushing yards last week vs the ‘Skins and that will be no easy task. There will also be the possibility of a 2-0 start to the season for the Eagles which is so vital in the usually uber-competitive NFC East.

3. SEAHAWKS over the 49ers- There will definitely be a ‘revenge’ factor entering into this ‘war’ that will take place in Seattle by the 49ers who got embarrassed 42-13 in Week 16 last year. However, it’s difficult to go against a team that went undefeated at home last season! In case you haven’t heard, the fans at this game will be trying to break the Guinness World Record for the crowd with the loudest roar since it was last set at a soccer game in Turkey in 2011, so it could prove even harder for the 49ers to get their plays off on time. Therefore you can expect several false starts by S.F. on Sunday. Russell Wilson is also in his second year under center now for the ‘Hawks and has Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and a top 5 RB in Marshawn Lynch to go along with arguably the best defense in the league. Probably the “Game of the Week!”

4. BILLS over the Panthers- Both of these teams played against very good teams last week; the Patriots and Seahawks respectively, and both lost in very close and winnable contests.  The edge here has to go to Buffalo however who seems to be playing  well with rookie quarterback E. J. Manuel at the helm. The Panthers did hold Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch to just 43 rushing yards on 17 carries so the Bills will need to open up some lanes for C.J. Spiller if they want to sustain drives and control the clock. The home crowd, which seemed to bother Tom Brady’s timing somewhat last week, will also be a factor in the game. The Pats, normally an extremely well-disciplined team, had many false starts in that one and almost lost the game outright. Edge here to the Bills.

5. BENGALS over the Steelers- We thought the line on this game would be a bit steeper than a touchdown as the Bengals just have far too many weapons at their disposal and should completely dominate in this contest.  Ben Roethlisberger couldn’t even muster up a 200 passing yard day against the Titans last Sunday and will not have an easier time of it against the staunch and stingy defense of the Bengals. Pittsburgh also lacks any real offensive threats now and the their offensive line is not giving Roethlisberger ample time to get the ball off. We’re expecting the Bengals to avenge all those many losses over the years to more well-balanced Steeler teams.
