Fantasy Basketball 2013: This week’s Waiver Wire Pickups

Now that the Super Bowl is history, it’s time for those of you in Fantasy Basketball leagues to tweak your rosters with just around six weeks left in the Fantasy season. Some of this week’s pickups are for owners to keep an eye on, some are for those in deeper leagues, but all are widely available.

Marvin Williams-SF/PF-Jazz- 9% Owned- Williams is a “watch” candidate as he has just begun to see more minutes but the sampling is still to small for us. The former 1st round pick (2nd overall) in the 2005 draft has posted 25 points, 21 rebounds, and  7-7 at the free throw line over his last two games. Should this trend continue- Williams has averaged 30 minutes in those 2 games- then we would recommend  you consider adding him to your roster. The little owned Williams has had an achilles issue of late but has not missed much time because of the ailment.

 Andray Blatche-PF/C-Nets- 35% Owned- Blatche has missed the last couple of games due to a sore hip but is expected to make his return on Thursday when the Nets take on the Spurs. Prior to the injury, Blatche, in his last six games, has averaged 14.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.o block. He can also get you a 3-pointer on most nights which is always welcomed from the PF/C position.

Tim Hardaway Jr.-SG-Knicks- 20% Owned- We are very high on Hardawy Jr. as is his coach Mike Woodson: “He’s the biggest surprise on this team so far this season.” Although Hardaway Jr. has seen a surge in his playing time since Iman Shumpert went down, it is safe to assume that even with Shumps return, Hardaway Jr. will continue to see some decent minutes but owners should wait and see just how many before taking Hardaway Jr. off of waivers.. The 1st round pick in the 2013 draft already has the highest 3-point shooting percentage among all rookies and is fourth in scoring as well. In his last 5 games Hardaway has averaged 18 PPG, has one steal in all but one, and has drained 17 3-pointers. Hardaway Jr. won’t get you more than points and threes so if that’s what your lacking take a flier on the neophyte.

Patrick Patterson-PF/C-Jazz- 12% Owned- Averaging just around 24 minutes a game, Patterson has scored in double digits in three of his last five games and just missed a double-double in two of them. You can count on at least 10 points and 6+ rebounds a game and, as an added attraction, Patterson will get you a 3-pointer almost every night. In his last game, a loss to the Blazers, Patterson finished with 13 points, nine boards, three assists, one block and one 3-pointer. Those of you deeper leaguers could do worse than Patterson who is available in most leagues.

OUR TWO “QUICK PICKS”

DeMarre Carroll-SF/PF-Hawks-36% Owned- We simply cannot understand why Carroll is not owned in many more leagues. He is averaging 15.8 PPG, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.3 3-pointers over the past 2 weeks and is ranked 12th  according to Yahoo! sports over that span. Just makes no sense. Should you see him available and there are at least 10 or more in your league, snatch him up immediately!

Timofey Mozgov-C-Nuggets- 12% Owned- Solely for those of you in deeper leagues in search of a big guy who can rebound (6.2 over his last 5 games) can block (1.2) and get you a few points (11.6). The 27 year old former Knicks cast off is putting up those numbers off the bench over around 23 MPG.

By now all you team owners are well-entrenched in your league’s playoffs. As the regular NBA season continues to wind down, more & more players have been getting some extra minutes while veterans get some much needed rest. Teams can also see what some players can do with more floor time. This week’s pickups have several of those players. Good luck!

1. Maurice Harkless- SF-Magic- Harkless is one of those receiving very generous minutes and the 1st round pick out of St. John’s in last year’s draft has responded well with the 60 shot attempts he’s taken in just the last 4 games. If you own a team that’s in need of steals, Harkless has 19 thefts in his last five games. He has averaged 8 rebounds over the last four and has recorded double-digit scoring in 16 of his last 18 games. The youngster should make for a decent pickup in all 12+ leagues. Harkless is owned in only 24% of leagues. Savvy managers will be picking Harkless up while the Magic continue to showcase his talents.

2. Patrick Patterson-PF,C-Kings- The Rockets, who drafted Patterson in the first round of the 2010 draft, gave up on him after only three seasons and traded the 6′ 9″ PF to the Sacramento Kings a little over two weeks ago, Foe those in deeper leagues, Patterson’s 15 points and 6 rebound average over his last four games plus 1-2 treys, could help you down the playoff stretch. Patterson is available in over 70% of most leagues.

3. Jonas Valanciunas-C-Raptors- A shout-out to this 7 footer who was picked as one of our Sleepers to consider before the season began. He too has seen a surge in his minutes over the last six games. The Lithuanian big guy has proven to the Raptors head coach, Dwane Casey, that he has made the right decision with his 12.7 points, 7 rebounds, 30-45 (67%) shooting from the field and 16-19 (84%) from the free throw line. Here is another player that should be owned in all formats especially while he’s getting the extra minutes. Valanciunas is owned in just 22% of leagues.

4. Reggie Evans-PF-Nets- Strictly a one-category player throughout his career, Evans can and will only help your team if you are lacking in rebounds. We are recommending him now because he has been in the midst of his most productive stretch so far this season. Evans has posted double-digit rebounds in 9 of his last 10 games while pulling down 20 or more boards in three of them. He is owned in under 25% of leagues and is a serviceable pickup in deeper leagues.

5. Jerryd Bayless-PG-SG-Grizzlies- The former 1st rounder, 11th overall in the 2008 draft has accumulated more frequent flier miles than points scored as he has played on 4 teams in his 5 year NBA career. Solely for those in deeper leagues, Bayless can only net you points (he has averaged 16.2 points in his last 5 games), but also treys. He scores in bunches and we think you will be rewarded.  Hardly owned, (under 10%), Bayless would make a formidable streamer as well, as the Grizzlies will play 4 times during the week of 3/25.

With only a short-week schedule and the All-Star break, we came up with a list of players that those of you in deeper formats should check out and continue to watch in the coming days. Those ‘serious’ owners in deeper leagues have much more maintenance for your team(s) than those in more shallow ones. While we can’t promise that any of the players below will turn out to be ‘Diamonds in the Rough’ , there remains the possibility that they might fill some holes and even turn out to be assets in the long run. Here they are…

Alan Anderson-SG/SF-Raptors- We had mentioned this un-drafted player in a previous column and although he had slowed down considerably after our ‘mention’ due to a lack of minutes, he has become more relevant now over the last three Raptors games by averaging 15.7 points over that span including a 26 point breakout game vs the Knicks last Wednesday. Still being considered in trade talks (the deadline is Feb. 21st), he is someone to consider if you’re in need of points and treys ONLY. He is only owned in a handful of leagues so we suggest watching him this coming week to see if minutes and points continue.

Patrick Patterson-PF/C-Rockets- Since January 23rd, This former 1st round pick in the 2010 draft out of Kentucky has scored in double-digits in 11 of 12 games. While only recording two double-doubles in those dozen games, he has averaged around 5 rebounds per contest. He plays between 27-29 minutes per night and, what we like for those with shooting percentages in your league’s settings is his 51.9% F.G. shooting. For a big guy like Patterson, even his 75.5% F.T. shooting isn’t that bad. He is even worth a flier in 12+ leagues because of his consistent playing time & stats and is only owned in about 1/3 of leagues.

Kyle Singler-SG/SF-Pistons-  We saw him play when he was with Duke and weren’t surprised when he was taken in just the second round in 2011. Since recently being moved from shooting guard to the starting 3, his numbers have gotten better. Scoring in double-digits in 7 of his last 8 games, he shot 48.2% from the field (40-83). Again, in deeper formats, if you need a guy that can give you around 12 points, 5 rebounds, and a trey a night, then Singler could be taken as he is only owned in 13% of leagues.

Jermaine O’Neal-C-Suns- You’re probably wondering how this 34 year old- 18 year NBA veteran can still be viable in fantasy leagues. Well, we thought the same thing until he returned from a chest injury he had over a week ago. Since then, he has averaged 10.4 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, and 2 blocks in just 23 minutes of work a night. He also had his best game since November 23rd last Tuesday night in Phoenix when, during the Suns’ loss to the Lakers, O’Neal scored 12 points (4-9 FG, 4-4 FT), had 13 boards, and 5 blocks, giving him 9 blocks in his last 3 games. The Suns play four times this week and if O’Neal has a similar game vs the Trail Blazers on Tuesday night, we would suggest grabbing him. Barely owned (4%) that should not be a problem.

P.J. Tucker-SG/SF/PF-Suns- Hardly a household name, (he’s only played in 68 career games), Tucker is the one from this group that we have to admit is a stretch, at best. The only noticeable difference in his game since Phoenix made him a starter back on New Year’s Eve, is that there has been a bit of a tweak in the amount of shots he’s taken over the past two games (20) which is what he has been averaging over a 3-game period. In the last two he’s averaged 10.5 points, 5 boards, a trey, a steal, and a block. A small sample to be sure but like O’Neal, he has four games this week. We also like his three-position eligibility. Check out his numbers on Tuesday night and either wait or consider him in very deep leagues.
