Fantasy Basketball 2013: This week’s Waiver Wire Pickups

Now that the Super Bowl is history, it’s time for those of you in Fantasy Basketball leagues to tweak your rosters with just around six weeks left in the Fantasy season. Some of this week’s pickups are for owners to keep an eye on, some are for those in deeper leagues, but all are widely available.

Marvin Williams-SF/PF-Jazz- 9% Owned- Williams is a “watch” candidate as he has just begun to see more minutes but the sampling is still to small for us. The former 1st round pick (2nd overall) in the 2005 draft has posted 25 points, 21 rebounds, and  7-7 at the free throw line over his last two games. Should this trend continue- Williams has averaged 30 minutes in those 2 games- then we would recommend  you consider adding him to your roster. The little owned Williams has had an achilles issue of late but has not missed much time because of the ailment.

 Andray Blatche-PF/C-Nets- 35% Owned- Blatche has missed the last couple of games due to a sore hip but is expected to make his return on Thursday when the Nets take on the Spurs. Prior to the injury, Blatche, in his last six games, has averaged 14.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.o block. He can also get you a 3-pointer on most nights which is always welcomed from the PF/C position.

Tim Hardaway Jr.-SG-Knicks- 20% Owned- We are very high on Hardawy Jr. as is his coach Mike Woodson: “He’s the biggest surprise on this team so far this season.” Although Hardaway Jr. has seen a surge in his playing time since Iman Shumpert went down, it is safe to assume that even with Shumps return, Hardaway Jr. will continue to see some decent minutes but owners should wait and see just how many before taking Hardaway Jr. off of waivers.. The 1st round pick in the 2013 draft already has the highest 3-point shooting percentage among all rookies and is fourth in scoring as well. In his last 5 games Hardaway has averaged 18 PPG, has one steal in all but one, and has drained 17 3-pointers. Hardaway Jr. won’t get you more than points and threes so if that’s what your lacking take a flier on the neophyte.

Patrick Patterson-PF/C-Jazz- 12% Owned- Averaging just around 24 minutes a game, Patterson has scored in double digits in three of his last five games and just missed a double-double in two of them. You can count on at least 10 points and 6+ rebounds a game and, as an added attraction, Patterson will get you a 3-pointer almost every night. In his last game, a loss to the Blazers, Patterson finished with 13 points, nine boards, three assists, one block and one 3-pointer. Those of you deeper leaguers could do worse than Patterson who is available in most leagues.

OUR TWO “QUICK PICKS”

DeMarre Carroll-SF/PF-Hawks-36% Owned- We simply cannot understand why Carroll is not owned in many more leagues. He is averaging 15.8 PPG, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.3 3-pointers over the past 2 weeks and is ranked 12th  according to Yahoo! sports over that span. Just makes no sense. Should you see him available and there are at least 10 or more in your league, snatch him up immediately!

Timofey Mozgov-C-Nuggets- 12% Owned- Solely for those of you in deeper leagues in search of a big guy who can rebound (6.2 over his last 5 games) can block (1.2) and get you a few points (11.6). The 27 year old former Knicks cast off is putting up those numbers off the bench over around 23 MPG.

Melo…’Not ready for prime time’

The Furnace went to the Knicks/Nets game on President’s Day and lists the FOUR reasons why we feel the Knicks lost…

1. Carmelo Anthony- Melo was totally ineffective on both sides of the ball. He shot 36% from the floor, scored a total of 11 points, and  turned the ball over six times. He never shook off the rust that had accumulated after being sidelined for the last seven games. His shots and passing were awkward and tentative as he clearly was not ready to return to ‘primetime’.

2. Deron Williams-  He had circled this day and this game on his mental calendar. Williams wanted to atone for the humiliation heaped on him in their last meeting when Jeremy Lin dropped 28 on him in a Knicks win. He, as they say, was on a ‘quest’! He made 10 baskets on the night; 8 of which came from 3-point land, a career high. Had he not fouled out in the 4th quarter he might have scored more than the 38 that he already had. And he made sure he rubbed the Knicks’ noses in it as he bumped a team mate after a time out had been called right after making one of his 8 threes- just to mimic the bumping that Lin and Landry Fields often do.

3. Iman Shumpert/Bill Walker-Having these two players sidelined with injuries, hurt them significantly on defense. At 6′ 5″, Shumpert (knee) although an offensive liability at times, can be a pest to opposing players when he’s on ‘D’. Same goes for Billy Walker (elbow), and both can, on occasion, shoot the three which would have been helpful to the Knicks on Monday as the Nets dropped 15 threes on them. With  Steve Novak and J.R. Smith going 2-13 from beyond the arc last night, Walker and Shumpert could have made a huge difference.

4. Mike D’Antoni- There were two things that D’Antoni didn”t do in the Knicks loss to the Nets that we find fault with. The most glaring one was not finding an answer to Deron Williams. Why not double him up and force him to pass or at best have the press make him more susceptible to turning the ball over. He could have even tried switching Lin and putting Landry Fields, a much more adept defender than Lin, on Williams. It’s inexcusable for any player to drop 18 points in a quarter on any team let alone on the Knicks who have played pretty good defense most of the season, but that’s what Williams did. Understood that you can’t stop Deron, but at least slow him down. Limit him to 9-10 points in the 3rd quarter and the Knicks might have won the game. (they only lost by 8).

We also didn’t care for the way D’Antoni utilized Carmelo. Here’s a guy that was out with a nasty groin injury and missed seven games. He shoots 36% on the night and turns the ball over six times, as we had mentioned, and yet D’Antoni has him play more minutes than any other player on the team!?! It wasn’t like he was getting any better as the game wore on…

The Knicks go on to play the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. The Hawks who are already without Al Horford (pectoral surgery) and is not expected back until mid April, will also be without the services of Joe Johnson (knee). Marvin Johnson (personal) who missed yesterday’s game is due back for Wednesday’s contest vs the Knicks. He’ll get plenty of extra time in this one for those of you in fantasy leagues in need of rebounds, threes and points and a fill-in on the last day of games before All Star weekend.
