Fantasy Football 2013: Waiver Wire Pickups for Week #14

As most leagues are preparing to enter the playoffs next week, we have put together some waiver wire pickups for those jockeying for a playoff birth as well as for those who are looking to fortify their roster as the fantasy football post-season is now underway. This will be our last featured Waiver Wire Pickups article for this season. We hope that most of you benefited from our suggestions and wish you good luck in the weeks ahead.

LeGarrette Blount-RB-Patriots- 7% Owned- Never sure who is the go-to-guy when it comes to Bill Belichick. Steven ‘fumbles’ Ridley gave way to Blount last week and rushed 12 times for 44 yards and a touchdown. As a possible flex play in deeper leagues, Blount goes up against a Cleveland team that yielded 108 rushing yards to Jacksonville last Sunday.

Andre Holmes-WR-Raiders- 1% Owned- With Denarius Moore (shoulder) missing the last couple of games, the second-year pro has totaled nine catches for 168 yards in those two games and he seems to be clicking with fill-in QB Matt McGloin. We think he’s worth a flier this week as Holmes will face a N.Y. Jets team that has given up the 9th most fantasy points to wide receivers.

LaDarius Green-TE-Chargers- 8% Owned- Green, 6′ 6″ and weighing in at 238 is now averaging 22.1 yards per catch on the season and has two touchdowns on 11 targets in his last two games. Green and Antonio Gates are setting up as a two tight-end set for the Bolts and he seems to be getting less coverage than the veteran Gates. Green faces a Giants team that gives up the 9th most fantasy points to tight ends.

Ryan Tannehill-QB-Dolphins- 25% Owned- Here is something that you may not know; over the last four weeks Tannehill has the eighth most fantasy points among all quarterbacks in the league! More than Drew Brees, Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson. All of those in two-quarterback leagues should sit up and take notice. He is widely available and makes for a serviceable QB2.

Caleb Sturgis-K-Dolphins- 8% Owned- Another Dolphin that’s going pretty much unnoticed, Sturgis has kicked the fourth most field goals in the league over the past four weeks and has the sixth most fantasy points during that span. He should be called upon frequently in this week’s matchup vs the Steelers and should be considered in most deeper leagues.

Fantasy Football: Week #7 Waiver Wire Pickups

With a plethora of injuries following week #6, and in addition to another in a series of bye weeks, there are some nice additions that you can make to your roster listed here. The key is to act quickly before you find yourself scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel. Here are our best five waiver wire pickups for week #7:

Josh Gordon-WR-Browns- There certainly appears to be some decent chemistry between QB Brandon Weeden and WR Josh Gordon. Targeted the second most times in last week’s contest, Gordon had a 71 yard touchdown pass vs the Bengals and totaled 99 yards on the day. This week he’ll go up against the Indianapolis Colts who have given up the 7th most fantasy points to wide receivers this season. Owned in less than 20% of leagues, Gordon makes for a decent flex play and serviceable WR2 in week #7.

Felix Jones-RB-Cowboys- With usual starting RB DeMarco Murray (foot) already ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, Felix Jones become a Must Add in all formats this week. Jones ran for just under the century mark (92 yards) and a touchdown against Baltimore last week and should have an easier time of it vs a Panther’s team that’s yielded the 2nd most fantasy points to running backs. Plus, Jones can catch a ball or two as well and will be an asset in PPR leagues this week as well. As of Tuesday, Jones was owned in only 26% of leagues; a figure that’s sure to triple before the week is over.

Kendall Wright-WR-Titans- How this rookie isn’t more widely owned is beyond belief, especially in PPR formats. He has 33 receptions on the season to go along with 285 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. He caught 6 passes for 71 yards last week vs the Steelers and dropped a very catchable pass which would have been a touchdown. He’ll face Buffalo this week, a team that allows the 5th most fantasy points to wide receivers. Available in over 60% of leagues, you would be wrong not to grab Wright this week!

Phil Dawson-K-Browns- ‘Old reliable’ has been on a role of sorts and not just for this season. He has connected on all of his 12 field goal  attempts this year and 18 in a row dating back to last season! Last week he nailed a 41 and 38 yarder in a windy stadium in Cleveland and will go up against the Colts in week #7 which should afford him more opportunities to keep his perfect record alive. He makes a great replacement for Falcons K Matt Bryant (on a bye this week) and is available in 75% of most leagues.

LeGarrette Blount-RB-Buccaneers- Before you start to roll your eyes with our last pickup, RB starter Doug Martin is still exactly that; the starting RB for the Buccaneers. However, for managers in deeper leagues in search of a flex play option, Blount is well worth a grab. He has scored a touchdown in each of  his last two games and last week had just six less carries than Martin. We like him this week because the Bucs take on the Saints who just happen to give up the most fantasy points to running backs in the league. As of Tuesday, Blount was available in 80% of leagues.

FANTASY FOOTBALL: Avoid drafting these 10 potential busts…

You spend so much time preparing for your draft; studying player’s past perfomanaces, checking out possible sleepers, breakout candidates, and up and coming rookies. Yet your season can be lost with just a couple of draft picks that fail to meet your  expectations. Here are some potential busts that you should consider avoiding if possible…

1. Reggie Bush-RB- Dolphins- Whenever his name comes up, not long after, the word ‘injury’ undoubtedly follows. Although last year was an anomaly for Bush, he did manage to miss 20 games over the 2010 and 2009 seasons. He rushed for 1086 yards and 6 TDs last season but can you sleep at night without wondering if or when another injury could impede his season? Is his 6 TD’s worth that kind of worry?

2. Rashard Mendenhall-RB-Steelers- My rule of thumb when it comes to running backs coming off of ACL or MCL or any major injury is “let the buyer beware.” Mendenhall is such a back. He tore his right ACL in week 17 and more than likely will begin the season on the PUP list. He wasn’t having a great season before his injury and without knowing how viable a RB he’ll be this year, try to avoid drafting the sexy name, and seek another option instead.

3. Josh Freeman-QB-Buccaneers- Freeman and the next potential bust, Vincent Jackson almost go hand in hand. Mark Sanchez wasn’t the only QB to regress last year. Freeman managed to finish the season with the league’s second most picks, 22 against 16 TDs. Rookie sensation Doug Martin, (one of our Rookie’s to consider this season), will be making up the majority of an already lackluster offense in Tampa Bay; taking some of the pressure off of Freeman. Unfortunately when games get out of hand, he’ll be forced to air it out and that’s when INT’s begin to mount up. Stay clear.

4. Vincent Jackson-WR-Buccaneers- Staying in Tampa Bay, we’re suggesting that V-Jax be avoided if possible as their are danger signs on the outspoken $56 million T.B. pickup in the off season. The offense, as stated above, will be a run heavy one (so says new head coach Greg Schiano), and by leaving the very capable passing prowess of Philip Rivers for a much lower tierd QB in Josh Freeman… well, can you spell bust?

5. Laurent Robinson-WR-Jaguars- In some ways similar to Vincent Jackson, the speedster who exploded for 11 TD’s last year with Dallas, now finds himself on a Jags team with unproven and unimpressive QB Blaine Gabbert istead of a more seasoned Tony Romo. Forget about double-digit touchdowns from Robinson this year. Maurice Jones-Drew and another rookie that we like, Justin Blackmon, will probably make up the major portion  of the Jags’ offense although as Gabbert goes, so will the Jags. Avoid or draft with caution.

6. Mark Sanchez-QB-Jets- The ‘Sanchise’ did a 180 last year and like Josh Freeman,  Sanchez suffered through a regression leading his team to a pedestrian and under achieving 8-8 finish. With the signing of  Tim Terrific, Sanchez, besides losing snaps to the southpaw will find his passes to the endzone limited because of Tebow scampering in on wildcat type of plays. Therefore don’t look for him to put up even ‘Sanchez type of numbers’ like he did in ’09 and ’10. There are other QBs to consider before grabbing this potential and probable bust.

Other potenial busts that you might want to consider leaving on the draft board for someone else are:

Adrian Peterson-RB-Vikings- ACL and MCL tear last Christmas Eve.

Shonn Greene- RB-Jets- Tebow will get short yardage opportunities.

Antonio Gates-TE-Chargers- Foot injuries the last two seasons.

LeGarrette Blount-RB-Buccaneers- Will take a back seat to Doug Martin.
