Fantasy Football: Week 2 Studs and Duds

There were many outstanding performances in week #2, some were even record-breaking. Some with names that you probably don’t even have on your roster. And then there were those that disappointed the owners who drafted them so soon (and in most cases so high) on draft day. Here is a list of both studs and duds that stood out last week:

  • STUDS

Eli Manning-QB-Giants- Against a pretty good defense that had given up only 10 points to Cam Newton and the Panthers a week earlier, Eli and the Giants teed off for quadruple that amount on Sunday at Met Life Stadium. Down by as many as 14 at one point, Eli threw the rock 51 times for 520 yards eclipsing the previous record held by Phil Simms who set it in 1985 with 513 passing yards. The only other Giants QB to pass for 500 or more yards in a game was Y.A. Tittle; 505 yards in 1962.

Donte Rosario-TE-Chargers- How many of you had him on your roster? QB Philip Rivers has his number in the red zone several times on Sunday as Rosario had four receptions for 48 yards and three touchdowns. Here’s a guy that hadn’t scored a touchdown since he was with the Panthers in 2009! In fact he had never scored more than 2 TDs in one season in his five-year career! Antonio Gates (sore ribs) is expected back this week so don’t go & grab Rosario up off of waivers just yet.

Reggie Bush-RB-Dolphins- The former 1st round second overall pick of the Saints in 2006, lit it up yesterday with 26 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns. After that performance Bush became the second leading rusher in the league behind C.J. Spiller.  Bush rushed for 71 yards with one fumble in a 24-6 loss to the N.Y. Jets in week 5 last year. He’ll face the Jets at home next week.

Hakeem Nicks/Victor Cruz-WRs-Giants- These two receivers were the recipient of the majority of Eli Manning’s passes collecting a combined 371 receiving yards between them and two touchdowns. Nicks (199 yards) was targeted a team high 15 times while Cruz (179 yards)  caught 11 passes and then acknowledged his Grandmother after scoring his lone TD as she was the one responsible for him learning his now famous Salsa endzone dance.

  • DUDS

Chris Johnson-RB-Titans- Another lackluster day for the former 1st rounder. The Titans had to play catch-up for most of the game once again but C J’s 8 rushes for 17 yards brought his two-week total to 19 carries for just 21 yards; a 1.1 YPC average. At this point most of Johnson’s owners are scratching their heads as his numbers continue to slide. In his 1st two weeks of the season last year he had 77 rushing yards, 2010 176 yards & 2 TDs, and 2009 254 yards & 2 TDs. Not a good sign.

Tim Tebow-QB-Jets- The talk around the Jets camp before the season started was that Tebow was to be in 15-20 plays per game. He came in for 9 plays in week 1 and just 3 on Sunday, all in the 3rd quarter. He has 33 rushing yards in the 2 games and has no completions. It would be hard to believe that he will be back next season if this trend continues, especially if Sanchez stays healthy.

Jamaal Charles-RB-Chiefs- Charles, who blew out his knee (torn ACL) on Sept. 18th last season re-injured his surgically repaired knee during Sunday’s game but prior to that his 6 attempts for 7 yards were nothing to write home about. For the season he has 22 carries for 90 yards and no touchdowns. Another reason why we always are a little leery of drafting players coming off major injuries.

Kevin Ogletree-WR-Cowboys- Feel bad for the over 2 million owners who ran to the waiver wire to grab this potential stud after his amazing first game vs the Giants when he caught 8 passes for 114 yards and 2 TDs. Week two was a completely different story. Tony Romo threw 40 passes but only one to Ogletree for 26 yards. We would recommend that you keep him on the bench for another week until or unless he proves his worth.

Fantasy Football: Week #2 Waiver Wire Pickups

It was great having football back last weekend! Drafts are over and the craziness that was week #1 is now in the books. Now comes the hard part. Deciding which of the several breakout stars of week 1 to grab or just leave alone. However, the pickups made before week 2 are usually the most important for grabbing potential studs. Study carefully and consider some of these choices we’ve made for you:

1. Alfred Morris-RB-Redskins- No surprise with this pickup as he made fantasy headlines with his breakout week 1 performance vs the Saints. He compiled 96 yards and 2 touchdowns, singling himself as the new starting back in Washington. With his 28 carries it is no secret that Morris will be the main go-to-back and, at worst, will end up at least as a RB2 with many of the goal line carries going his way. To say this is a Must Add would be an understatement!  Just remember as long as Mike Shanahan is the coach there will be some mystery attached to any back on his team. Of course with the Rams on tap in week 2, Morris is an absolute start should you be lucky enough to get him.

2. Kevin Ogletree-WR-Cowboys- Over 180,000 owners snatched up the wideout within 24 hours of his season debut on Wednesday night vs the Giants. Over 2 million have grabbed the upstart WR in the 3 days that followed. If he’s still a part of your waiver wire, you can feel free to pick him up but temper your expectations as there are other weapons on the Cowboys (Miles Austin, Jason Witten) who, if they were playing at 100% last Wednesday and against a team with a viable healthy secondary, Ogletree doesn’t have the game of his life. If you have bench room, go ahead and get him. If not there are other WRs available with a bigger upside.

3. Randall Cobb-WR-Packers- Case in point. Cobb was targeted and ended up with the most receptions on the Pack at 9-and that’s with a healthy bunch of receivers such as  Jordy Nelson, Jermichael, and veteran Greg Jennings on the field. What I like is the other bonus you get with Cobb and that’s his return capabilities as witnessed on Sunday when he ran a punt return back 75 yards for a touchdown. You would have to check if points are given for return yards and/or return touchdowns in your league, and if they are then Cobb is someone you can add with confidence.

4. Stephen Hill-WR-Jets- The Jets second round pick out of Georgia Tech looked good in pre-season but exploded on Sunday for 5 receptions for 89 yards and two scores. There seems to be a chemistry forming between Sanchez and Hill which could relate into a sleeper season for Hill. Of course a lot depends on Mark Sanchez and what we see over two of the next three games. Passing could become more of a nightmare for the former 1st rounder when he faces Pittsburgh and San Francisco. No easy task there but we still believe that Hill has the talent in the long run and is worth a  pickup in most formats.

5.Dennis Pitta-TE-Ravens- I realize that this choice is based on a small sampling from this 4th round pick in the 2012 draft, but he did have the most receptions and receiving yards of any other receiver on the Ravens on MNF which shows the confidence that Joe Flacco has in the youngster. The other TE Ed Dickson who had 22 yards receiving was utilized more in blocking schemes and although still blessed with great hands, there are more and more teams opting to go with two or more TEs after seeing what has happened in New England the past couple of years. We certainly recommend taking a flier on Pitta and in deeper leagues would even suggest picking him up.

 6. Defense/Special Teams- There are two in this category that would be serviceable options for Week #2:

  • Oakland Raiders- All in all the Raiders defense held the Chargers to just just one passing touchdown and five field goals. This week they’ll face one of the most anemic offenses in the league when they travel to Miami. In Ryan Tannehill, they’ll face a QB who last week was intercepted 3 times and sacked 3 times as well.
  • Cincinnati Bengals- Here too the Bengals will go up against another weak, inexperienced Browns quarterback in Brandon Weeden who threw four interceptions, coughed up two fumbles, and was sacked twice vs the Eagles last Sunday. His single digit QB rating (5.1) will tell you they are ripe for the taking making the Bengals a good addition to your roster this week.

Cruz, Wilson, & Karma make for a bad night at Met Strife Stadium

There’s a joke going around Twitterland that WR stud Victor Cruz saw the Giant’s team physician after the game on Wednesday night who told him he had a very high immune system and that if it didn’t change it would mean that he wouldn’t catch anything!

I don’t have the statistics right in front of me but if I were to venture a guess, I would say that Cruz had three drops in all of last season; and I would be close. Did his three drops on opening night in E. Rutherford, N.J. cost the N.Y. Giants the game? No. They only lost by a touchdown. But they were costly nonetheless.

What could have been more costly over the course of the game was rookie David Wilson’s 1st quarter fumble. Wilson, who electrified the crowds and Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbright in the pre-season, never lined up in the backfield again after his blunder causing the G-Men to go exclusively with Ahmad Bradshaw the rest of the game. He ended up fighting for every inch of the 76 yards he did manage to roll up.

Even the Karma wasn’t very good. The Cowboys didn’t play a ‘great’ game ; the Giants played a worse one. Dallas was called for double-digit penalties (13), was devoid of a running game the entire the first half, and had a Romo pass intercepted by LB Michael Boley for a 52 yard return.

Queens native WR Kevin Ogletree, perhaps the Victor Cruz of the 2012 season, caught 8 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Not Austin Miles, not Dez Bryant, not Jason Witten; none of them. In his first three seasons, Ogletree had caught just 25 passes and had zero touchdowns…Can you spell K-A-R-M-A? If you can’t, I can tell you that the Cowboys had plenty of it on the field on Wednesday night vs the Giants- their first Wednesday night game since they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 14-12 on Oct. 3rd, 1934.

And then there was the Giants depleted secondary; no Thomas, no Prince, and even replacement Michael Coe went down with a hamstring injury during the game. An ineffective 4th stringer forced the Giants staff to look through the stands for a healthy concessions staffer to help out, but the beer sales were too brisk for the guy to suit up!

Give credit to the ‘Boys (hard as that might be to do for some fans of Big Blue), but they seemed to want this game more than the defending Super Bowl Champions. That was clear. It was also clear that Kevin Ogletree is fast becoming Tony Romo’s favorite target. Until, of course, he plays a team with a healthy secondary.We’ll see…

Meantime, given the Giants’ second half schedule, one of the worst in memory, they need to focus on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-a game that already can be classified as the obligatory “must win”. The Bucs come in to Met Life Stadium on Sunday September 16th which will give Victor Cruz about 10 days to fix his immune system…
