NFL Week #14: The Week’s Five Best Bets

Close losses last week of the field goal variety, did us in in two of our three losses bringing the season total to 42-23. We did manage to pick our upset of the week correctly, a stunning victory by the Seahawks over Da Bears and the hapless Jets one point win over the pedestrian Cardinals in 1 7-6 snorer… We’re hoping that we get to finish the season out strong as we did last year so here’s our Five Best Bets for week #14…

Jets over the JAGUARS- Who would have thought we’d go back to the well and pick the anemic Jets twice in two weeks? Well this matchup was just too tempting to pass up. The Jets need to leave the hostile & depressing confines of Met Life Stadium and this this Floriday trip gives them that opportunity. The Jags are a team even worse off than the Gang Green having lost five out of six home games this season. They will be without their best offensive weapon of late in WR Cecil Shorts leaving them with WR Justin Blackman, TE Marcedes Lewis, and fourth RB back up Montel Owens (no relation to Terrell). If they can tighten up their defense again which surrended just 6 points to the lowly Cardinals last week, they should win this one handily.

BROWNS over the Chiefs– This won’t be the same game emotionally driven game the Chiefs played last week immediately following the tragic loss and double murders of Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend. They travel to Cleveland this week to face a much improved Browns team that should easily handle a Chiefs group who basically are playing out the rest of the season and awaiting a top pick in the 2013 NFL draft. We like how QB Brandon Weeden has progressed and were impressed with WR Josh Gordon’s breakout game last week. Not many more accolades we could come up with for RB Trent Richardson who should have a monstrous game this week.

STEELERS over the Chargers- Big Ben is expected to start in this one and that boost alone make the Steelers  more of a 6 point favorite to us. The Black & Gold have won 5 of their last seven, (two losses coming with replacements Leftwich and Batch in at QB for the injured Roethlisberger. They are currently sitting in 2nd in the AFC North at 7-5. The Chargers, on the other hand are going in an opposite direction as they are losers of their last four in a row and seven out of eight. Philip Rivers has passed for 300 or more yards just twice all season while RB Ryan Matthews has yet to eclipse 100 rushing yards in an one game. The Steelers would like a win here too because they’ll face the Bengals and the BRowns in their final two.

BUCCANEERS over the Eagles-  The Eagles put up a fight last week in Dallas losing 38-33 with Bryce Brown rushing for another big game with 169 yards which follows his 178 rushing game vs the Panthers the week prior. The Sunday night game in Dallas which now is followed by this week’s game in Tampa Bay make the Eagles, losers of their last eight straight games, another team just playing out the string. The 6-6 Buccaneers, currently second in the NFC South, have something to play for at least.Although losers of their last two to Atlanta & Denver by a combined total of 9 points, Josh Freeman should have an easy time in the pocket without any semblance of a pass rush from the Eagles defensive line. RB Doug Martin should also be in beast mode for this one.

BENGALS over the Cowboys- This is the time of year that the Cowboys begin their annual descent from the standings. They stand at 6-6 in second place in the highly contested NFC East but have forgotten how to play defense over the last two games yielding 64 points to the Redskins and Eagles. They will play their final three games against the Steelers, Saints  and Redskins; no easy task to be sure. Meantime the high potent offense of Andy Dalton, A.J. Green, BJGE, etc. have won their last four and are 7-5; second in the NFC North. This should be a high scoring affair for a Bengals team already on a roll.

Fantasy Football-Week #13 Waiver Wire Pickups

This is an important week in Fantasy Football. Several teams in your leagues have already clinched playoff spots making a win this week vital for the teams who are on the bubble. In some Yahoo! leagues this is the last week of the regular season! Here are some pickups for your consideration heading into ‘lucky’ week #13…

Mohamed Sanu-WR-Bengals-This former Rutgers star has fast becoming a favorite goal line receiver and #2 option for QB Andy Dalton opposite A.J. Green. Last week he was targeted nine times but only netted 29 receiving yards to go along with two touchdowns. He now has four touchdowns in the past three weeks making him a viable option in most leagues. He’ll face the S.D. Chargers this week who give up the 13th most fantasy points to WR’s. Sanu is available in over 90% of leagues.

Dallas Cowboys-Def/SP Teams- Although the ‘Boys have a less than ‘average’ defense, we like the matchup they’ll have this week going up against their divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles. The woeful ‘Birds have lost seven straight and are in a free-fall. The last time these two teams met back in week #10, the Cowboys amassed a total of 22 fantasy points. With Nick Foles and a very porous Eagles offensive line, this willl be the opportune time to pick up Dallas if your team defense/sp. team is suspect this week. Dallas is owned in 40% of leagues.

Justin Blackmon-WR-Jaguars- If you’re in need of a WR2 this week, then have we got a pickup for you! Coming off the Titan’s game last week, Blackmon rustled in a nice 12 fantasy points in standard non PPR leagues by virtue of his 62 receiving yards on five passes and a touchdown. This week he’ll face the team that has given up more fantasy points to wide receivers than any other in the league; the Bufallo Bills. Jags QB Chad Henne has formed a nice chemistry between him and Blackmon and we think he’s a must add in most formats. He’s only available in 40% of leagues so those of you in leagues of 10 teams or less  still have a shot of picking him up.

Jacquizz Rodgers-RB-Falcons-If you have been on the fence about whether or not to pick up Michael Turner’s back-up, then this week you should take the plunge. He’s coming off a week where he scored his first rushing touchdown against one of the more formidable teams against the rush in Tampa Bay. He ran for 49 yards on 1o carries and picked up another 30 yards on two receptions. Turner has not been burning up the turf this season and you can expect Rodgers to garner 15 or so carries this week against the N.O. Saints who have given up the league’s 2nd most fantasy points to running backs. Rodgers is currently available in just over 50% of leagues.

Garett Graham-TE-Texans- Tied for the most touchdowns (3) over the past four weeks, one behind Jimmy Graham (no relation), this Graham makes for a serviceable tight end in 12+ leagues and deeper leagues as he will face a Titans team that has given up the fourth most fantasy points to tight ends this season. He can fill in nicely if you’ve lost Gronk or if you have Brandon Myers on your team. (Myers goes up against one of the stingiest teams vs TE’s in the league in Cleveland this week). Graham is available in almost every league. We predict he’ll put up 40 yards and a score this week.

NFL Week #7-The Week’s Five Best Bets

As we surmised there were a fair amount of upsets last week and two of them helped to do us in; the Bills over the Cards and G.B over the Texans. We went 2-3 for the week but came close to going 1-4 as the Raiders made it very interesting in Atlanta. At 19-11 on the season we need a good week to return us to respectablity. Here are our five best bets for week #7:

GIANTS over the Redskins- It took six games for the mighty Giants defense to show up and after their brilliant performance in San Fransisco last Sunday we think it will carry over into this week’s divisional contest with the Redskins. We might not see the six sacks and three interceptions that did the 49ers in last week when Washington comes to East Rutherford because they are more of a ground & pound team with Alfred Morris & RGIII leading the way. Eli & his receivers are salavating at the ‘Skins lack of defense which yields an average of 417 yards to opposing offenses per game. They also have a bit of a ‘revenge’ factor going into this game as the Redskins did beat the Giants in both of their meetings last year. Giants are 4-2 but are 0-2 in their division and need this one.

RAIDERS over the Jags- After nearly pulling out what would have been the biggest upset of the week, the Raiders return to the Black Hole knowing that if they almost beat the undefeated Falcons on the road they certainly should have an easier time with the anemic Jags in their building. The Raiders defense will shine this week as they will face QB Blaine Gabbert who has been sacked 15 times this season and has thrown for 200 yards only once. Outside of RB Maurice Jones-Drew, there is little to get excited about as WR Justin Blackmon, the Jags 1st round pick, has yet to live up to the hype entering this season. The Silver & Black should romp in this one.

PATRIOTS over the Jets- The Jets lost both of their games against the Pats last year; one by 11 points and the other by 21 and their team is no better now than they were in ’11. Beleagured QB Mark Sanchez has averaged 12.6 completions over his last three games while in contrast, Tom Brady’s average is 27. Sanchez has thrown six picks and been sacked 10 times as his offensive line continues to struggle. Don’t be suckered into believing that they have turned things around as they beat a Colts team last week with a rookie quarterback and without their starting RB on the field. Can’t see the Jets and their lack of offense overtake New England at home with their many weapons.

BILLS over the Titans- In what could possibly be the highest scoring game of the day, we’re leaning towards the Bills. Neither team knows the concept of the word ‘defense’ so it could come down to the last team with the ball wins.. Discounting the last two weeks when the Bills played two of the leagues better defenses Arizona & S.F., QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 12 touchdown passes in the first four games! They have beaten Arizona, Cleveland (the best 1-5 team in the league) and blew out Kansas City at Orchard Park. RB Chris Johnson should have a career day but the Titans defense, which is ranked 25th in the league, will probably go up after this week.

BENGALS over the Steelers-Pittsburgh is having all kinds of injury issues; the worst is that Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman both have been ruled OUT for Sunday night’s game. They have several defensive injuries as well and Maurkice Pouncey, their center remains Questionable. That would be a big loss to their offensive line if Pouncey cannot suit up. At RB, Jonathan Dwyer, who played in just three games last year and has only 24 rushing attempts so far this season, is not going to scare anyone on the Bengals this week. If you look at the Steelers losses this season, to Denver, Oakland, & Tennessee, you would have to scratch your head wondering how this team, now at 2-3, has fallen from grace so rapidly. Clearly the Bengals are a step up in class but QB Andy Dalton needs to cut down on his interceptions (he has 6 in the last three games), if they are to be successful this week.
