NFL 2013: Week #9- The Furnace’s Best Bets

We used Halloween to make one of our five best bets this week, and we, as well as the Bengals, were shocked by the Dolphin’s “Walk-off Safety” in OT. There has only been three of these in NFL history with the first one coming in 1989 by the Vikings Mike Merriweather. Here are the remaining four picks for Week #9…

Home team in CAPS:

COWBOYS over the Vikings- This season’s version of the Dallas Cowboys is one that we haven’t seen for some time. Teams are scoring at will against them and as they enter Week 9 the Cowboys have the 32nd worst defense in the league giving up 315.4 yards of offense per game. The Vikings have had trouble scoring this seaosn as Adrian Peterson has been held in check for the most part and will be playing at less than 100% this week. They’re home this week and their division rival Giants have won two in a row so the incentive is there. ‘Boys are due for a lopsided win.

Saints over the JETS- One year removed from their defense giving up a staggering 7,042 yards on the season, Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan has turned things around in New Orleans. It is because of this plus their offensive prowess that they have been able to eke out 6 wins over their first 7 games. The Jets who just allowed the Bengals to put up 49 points against them last week , will not be that generous this week but should still fall to the visiting Saints.

RAIDERS over the Eagles- The Raiders, who cost us a perfect 5-0 record last Sunday with their stunning 3 point victory over the fading Steelers, seem to be putting things together. Althought Terrelle Pryor didn’t even throw for 100 yards last Sunday, he did run for a score as Oakland held on for the win. As the rare favorite this week, they should have no problem improving to 4-1 at the Black Hole over a fumbling, bumbling Eagles team.

Colts over the TEXANS- Although these two usually play extremely close and competitive games, the Colt’s have a much better resume this season with wins over some of the most elite teams in the NFL such as Seattle, Denver, and San Francisco. Case Keenum almost pulled off the upset of the year against the Chiefs last week, but we think that was more of a case of the Chiefs falling into a good old fashion “Trap Game” mode.

Where Peyton Manning SHOULD play…

So the long anticipated news that Peyton Manning and Jim Irsay’s Indianapolis Colts have finally decided to part ways has been announced.

It would have been more shocking if the news had come out that the Colts were going to keep Peyton Manning. Colts owner Jim Irsay and the aforementioned Peyton Manning have finally decided to cut the cord and part ways. It would have been completely illogical had he stayed and was on the roster with Andrew Luck.

By cutting Manning he will now be easily the most sought after free agent in football that there has been in years. The Colts also won’t have to take a salary cap hit by letting him go, which assuredly weighed into Irsay’s decision as well. Personally, I’m not sure what took Irsay so long to render a decision. It wasn’t like Peyton’s neck was going to get any better…I just think the inevitable just became reality.

Now all the discussions around the league, the media, and the fans will be to determine where Peyton should end up? The logical place and most obvious, would be the Miami Dolphins or the Arizona Cardinals. And more than likely he will end up on one of those teams. Especially in Arizona where there’s this stud WR Larry Fitzgerald and a decent running game to make things easier for him. Of course, the warm dry weather wouldn’t hurt either… But there’s another destination that we think would be perfect for Peyton even though it probably will never happen.

And that would be with the San Francisco 49ers. (that will make a lot of eyes roll…) No, the Niners do not play in a dome and the weather, although not the worst in the league (and not as balmy as Arizona), will not contain snow and temps that fall into the 20’s anytime soon. What Frisco does offer, unlike Miami, is a championship caliber team that will be among the favorites to win it all in 2012. Yes, they already have a quarterback in Alex Smith, but he can be released and replaced by Manning. Smith, an average quarterback at best, only averages around 200 passing yards a game. He did cut his interceptions down this past season but if Peyton is indeed healthy enough to withstand the rigors of an NFL season then why not S.F.?

Should anything happen to Peyton during the season, there is already a quarterback in the wings in Colin Kaepernick. After all, this is the guy the 49ers drafted for last year. So why not have the 2nd round pick out of Nevada study and learn under Peyton until he’s needed and ready to play?

And this is not just your ordinary quarterback. Kaepernick holds a whole host of records from his playing days at Nevada. The most impressive of which is that Kaepernick is the only quarterback in the history of Division I FBS college football to have passed for over 10,000 yards and rushed for over 4,000 yards in a collegiate career. Kaepernick is also the only Division 1 FBS QB to have passed for over 2,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 yards in a single season three times in a career (consecutively)!!

We’re still thinking that it’ll be Miami or Arizona but feel that the 49ers would be of interest to and pay dividends for Peyton Manning as well as the Niners. In the meantime, Andrew Luck will have some pretty big shoes to step into when he takes over the helm for the Indianapolis Colts. And after a stellar 14 year career with the Colts, the former 1st round overall pick in 1998 will first have to face the media, along with Jim Irsay, on Wednesday in what should prove to be a highly emotional event.  We wish him all the best…
