FIVE PICKUPS-WEEK #15

1. FELIX JONES-RB-COWBOYS- DeMarco Murray came in to replace Jones after he suffered a high ankle sprain back in week 6. Now Jones finds himself replacing Murray after his severe ankle injury last week against the Giants. We touted Jones before the season started back on August 21st. Here’s what we said back then in a post called:

 6 Sleeper candidates to consider:

6) Felix Jones-RB-Cowboys- Now that Marion Barber is on the Bear’s roster, Jones is poised to have an amazing year as witnessed by his performance in the pre-season gamevs the Broncos; 18 yard run and a 16 yard reception. All he needs now is for the offensive line to do a much better job than last year. A newly bulked up Jones is surely ‘sleeper worthy’.

2. DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY- RAIDERS- The Lions give up the ninth most fantasy points to WR’s and Bey has been on a roll the last three weeks while filling in for the injured Denarius Moore. Carson Palmer has made Heyward-Bey his most targeted wideout throwing passes his way 29 times since week 12. His line over that time is 12-141-1. We’re not saying he could replace a stud like Greg Jennings but he will make a decent WR3. The rookie is available in 75% of Yahoo! leagues.

3. BEN TATE-RB-TEXANS- In leagues of 10 or less, Tate could be a sneaky sleeper pickup this week  as the Texans go up against the team who gives up the most fantasy points to running backs in the league-the Carolina Panthers. He just missed the century mark last week running for 97 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals and should eclipse that total this week. He is available in about a third of all Yahoo! leagues and will make a formidable RB 2 if you’re lucky enough to snag him.

4. DEMARYIUS THOMAS-WR-BRONCOS- That this wide receiver is only owned in just 16% of Yahoo! leagues is beyond comprehension. In the last two weeks Thomas has 11 receptions for 222 yards and 3 touchdowns! If that isn’t enough reason to grab this former 1st round pick of the Broncos last year, then how about this; he’ll be facing the unbelievably generous secondary of the N.E. Patriots this week. Thomas makes a very desirable add for those that had to say goodbye to Greg Jennings and now have a hole to fill. If Denver’s front line can give Tebow time like he’s had in the last two weeks where he’s thrown for almost 400 yards, then Thomas should pay dividends.

5. DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:

*SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: They’re facing the Chicago Bears who, although stout on defense, they have only scored 13 points in the last two weeks. Seattle by contrast, has scored 61 points and given up 27 in their last two games. Available in 57% of Yahoo! leagues.

*TENNESSEE TITANS: They are playing the 0-13 Indianapolis Colts. Enough said. They’re available in 70% of Yahoo! leagues so no excuse.

*ARIZONA CARDINALS: Going up against the hapless Cleveland Browns who could be without their QB Colt (unlucky 1st name) McCoy who sustained a concussion last week. The Browns have averaged 13.5 points a game on the season but have just averaged 6.5 in their last two. They are available in 83% of Yahoo! leagues.

Good luck to all the teams coming off their 1st round byes this week! And to all those still alive and scratching for a decent finish in your leagues.

FIVE FANTASY PICKUPS-WEEK #4

1) NATE WASHINGTON-WR-Titans- Two reasons to pick Washington up off waivers: The first is because he will be the WR1 for the Titans going forward as Kenny Britt has been lost for the season with a torn ACL and MCL. The second is because Nate is averaging 7 receptions and 86 yards per contest even with Britt in the game. And that includes a score as well. He is already 20th in points in WR rankings. Two of the next four games are against the Browns and the Colts.

2) JASON CAMPBELL-QB-Raiders- Hard to believe that Campbell is available in 83% of Yahoo! leagues! He’s thrown just one interception in his last 148 attempts (and that was a Hail mary pass that was almost caught!) The QB of a surging Raider team that is 2-0 and should be 3-0, if not for their collapse in the Bills game 2 weeks ago, is a former 1st round pick of the Redskins out of Auburn. He will be going up against the defenseless Patriots who have yielded the most yards per game (377) in the NFL.

3) KENDALL HUNTER-RB-49ERS- Here is someone that can help your fantasy team right away. Frank Gore has a bum ankle and either won’t play or will play sparingly. Not that he’s been a of any help to the Niners with his 2.5 yards per carry average and under 50 yards rushing average per game. Hunter scored the only touchdown in the Bengal game last Sunday and figures to receive a lot more of the load this week vs the Eagles who have been giving up a ton of rushing yards; 5.5 average yards per carry.

4) VICTOR CRUZ-WR-GIANTS- The depleted receiving corps of the Giants provided an opportunity for Cruz this past Sunday and the young 24 year old out of UMASS did not disappoint. He finished with 3 catches good for 126 yards and two scores. He is certain to get the starting nod vs the Arizona Cardinals this week and is owned only in 12% of Yahoo! leagues.

 

 

5) JAMES CASEY-RB/TE-Texans- Casey, eligible at two positions, had his first rushing attempt for a modest 11 yards, but made himself more fantasy relevant by virtue of his 5 receptions good for 126 yards and a touchdown. Casey seems to have a knack for getting open, however we suggest that you consider this as a ‘cautious pickup’ as we will need to see how Gary Kubiak intends to utilize this talented back as Arian Foster is set to return this week vs the Steelers.

*Insurance Pickup-

BERNARD SCOTT-RB-BENGALS- If you have some room on your bench, Scott is the pickup for your league. Cedric Benson’s three game suspension is going down soon and as the Bungles will face the Bills, Jags, and Colts in the next 3 weeks, Scott could help fill your void at the RB position. Stash him if you can.

FIVE FANTASY PICKUPS-WEEK #3

1) FRED DAVIS-TE-Redskins- Chris Cooley’s surgically repaired knee has not helped ward off the emergence of Fred Davis so far this year. Cooley missed most of the preseason because of the swelling on his knee and only has 2 catches for 21 yards through the first 2 games. Davis, with 11 catches for 191 yards and a score is clearly the go to end on the ‘Skins. He’s currently owned in just 24% of Yahoo! leagues.

2) ERIC DECKER-W/R-Broncos- With Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal both dealing with groin injuries, Decker went off vs the Bengals. He had five receptions good for 113 yards and and 2 TDs. True, his value takes a hit with the return of Lloyd, but he will continue to be part of the Broncos offense going forward and will make for a serviceable WR2 in most leagues. Owned in 22% of Yahoo! leagues, he should be picked up in 10-12 team leagues.

3)BENGALS DEFENSE- We know this selection sounds strange to most, but consider that the Cincinnati ‘Bungles’ are eighth in pass defense and ninth in total defense through the first 2 weeks of the season. Sunday they’ll play the 49ers who are 29th in passing offense and 31st in total offense. Doesn’t sound that far-fetched now does it?

4)DENARIUS MOORE-W/R-Raiders- Moore had five catches for 146 yards and a score vs the Bills last Sunday. With injuries to Louis Murphy (groin) and Jacoby Ford (hamstring), Moore, owned in just 19% of Yahoo! leagues, is a must pickup.

5)REX GROSSMAN-QB-Redskins- Grossman, owned in only 22% of Yahoo! leagues, has put up nearly 600 yards passing and 4 TD’s in the first two weeks, is an excellent pickup this week. He’ll be facing a banged up Cowboy secondary ( their offense is depleted as well). Grossman currently ranks 6th in the NFL in passing and 6th in passing TD’s. Go get him!

*INSURANCE PICKUP:

TOBY GERHART-RB-VIKINGS- Someone to stash in your deeper leagues, Gerhart’s highlights last week included a 42 yard reception and a 31 yard run. Put him somewhere on your bench should Adrian Peterson go down with an injury. He would make a formidable back up.
