NFL 2014: Week #12 Waiver Wire Pickups

Injuries, injuries, injuries… They are a killer for owners in fantasy leagues, especially those fighting for a playoff berth in their league this late in the season. Arian Foster, Ronnie Hillman, Brandon Cooks, and Giovani Bernard are just a few with significant enough injuries that will make this week’s waiver wire picks even more enticing.

 Jonas Gray-RB-Patriots- Clearly Gray will be the top add in most leagues this week. By now all owners know all too well what kind of insane week the running back had with his 38 carries, 199 yards and four, count ’em, four touchdowns! Now the only thing left is to pray that your waiver pick is a low one in your league to still have a chance at grabbing him.

Kenny Stills-WR-Saints- Since the aforementioned Brandin Cooks will be out for several weeks, Stills becomes the instant add as he will probably end up being a WR 2 and possible starter for the high octane Saints. Tall, talented, and great hands are some of Cooks’ attributes that make him a solid pickup this week.

Josh McCown-QB-Buccaneers- Coming off a great Week 11 connecting with Mike Evans (for his career best day in the NFL), McCown becomes a nice add for Week 12 given that he will face one of the leagues most defensively challenged teams in the Bears-one that has given up an average of 21.8 points to opposing quarterbacks this season.

Dan Herron-RB-Colts- For those in deeper leagues and with the ankle injury to RB Ahmad Bradshaw, Herron makes for a decent pickup at running back with only Trent Richardson standing in his way. Herron will now see more snaps with the loss of Bradshaw and the ineffective and inconsistent play of Richardson.

Possible ‘Drop’ candidates:

Martellus Bennett-TE-Bears- Bennett’s value has been taking a hit over the past two months as the ex-Giant has only scored one touchdown since week 3. Cut him lose if you can find a better substitute on the waiver wire.

Pierre Garcon-WR-Redskins- Hard to drop someone with a name as ‘sexy’ as Pierre Garcon but at least consider beching the veteran receiver until he convinces you he’s returned to form and has re-established some chemistry with RGIII. With only 21 receiving yards over his last two games he isn’t worth starting.

NFL 2014: Our Five Best Bets for Week #11

As a side-note for those of you in Fantasy Leagues, remember that this is the last week for making trades in most leagues. Good luck to all… Here now are this week’s Five Best Bets.

BROWNS -3 over the Texans- For Cleveland and their fans, this week is one of historic proportions as it is the first time a Browns team has been in first place in the AFC North this late in the season in 20 years! With quarterback Ryan Mallett making his first NFL start for the Texans, we’re surprised the spread is as small as it is especially with a banged up Arian Foster and Jadeveon Clowney.

Falcons (pick) over the PANTHERS- Normally the Falcons aren’t  a good bet when on the road but besides beating the Buccaneers by 10 last Sunday, Atlanta is just a better team than Carolina who is coming off of a 24 point loss to the Eagles on Monday night. Although the Panthers do not play in a dome the trip will be a short one for the Falcons, the weather should not be a factor and the Panthers have a short week. 

SAINTS -7 over the Bengals- What in the world has happened to Andy Dalton? If you saw his inept performance last Thursday night you saw him not only missing his receivers but missing them badly. Saints lost a tough one to the 49ers last week and should return to their typical winning ways at home this week against a Bengals team that appears to be on life-support right now.

PACKERS -6 over the Eagles- This game has all the makings of a good old fashion shootout in Green Bay with both clubs having high potent offenses. Aaron Rodgers is 26-1 in his last 27 at home as a starter when he plays more than a half. Throw out Philadelphia’s 27-13 win at Lambeau last year as Rodgers was injured. The “Sanchise” will face a team quite different from the lame Panthers that he saw in Week 10.

Raiders +10 over the CHARGERS- We’re picking the Raiders here for two reasons; they kept it close and covered the spread when they played the Patriots and the Seahawks and this is a 5-4 Chargers team that got crushed by the Dolphins 37-0 in their last game in Week 9.

NFL 2014: Week #8 The Furnace’s Five Best Bets

For many teams this week will mark the halfway point in the regular season already. How fast did THAT go? Interesting weekend of football coming up; We’ve got another rookie quaterback starting, this one is Zach Mettenberger of the Titans, then there’s a 9:30 a.m. televised game from London featuring the Lions vs the Dolphins, concluding with the Cowboys and  Indians (Redskins actually) on MNF.

CHIEFS -7 over the Rams- The Rams did an outstanding job of upsetting the Seahawks last week but now it’s back to reality in probably the league’s second most loudest stadium. In their only home game this season, Kansas City destroyed New England 41-14. They will have no mercy on St. Louis on Sunday.

JAGUARS +6 over the Dolphins- Jags quarterback Blake Bortles has been coming on and led the Jaguars to an impressive 24-6 stunning win over the Browns in Week 7. Jacksonville’s defensive line has quietly amassed the second most sacks in the NFL (22). We’ll take the six points against a middle-of-the-road team like the Fish.

Texans -3 over the TITANS- Neither team will blow anyone away but we’ll take seasoned veteran gunslinger and “Bearded Wonder” Ryan Fitzpatrick over rookie Zach Mettenberger any day of the week, especially Sunday. Jadevon Clowney and J.J. Watt on defense and RB Arian Foster the team’s main offensive threat, make this an even easier decision.

Ravens -1 over the BENGALS- Baltimore and Joe Flacco have been playing on all cylinders while the ‘Bungles’, ever since the loss of all pro wide receiver A.J. Green went down with an injury, haven’t returned to their winning ways. The Ravens, known for their “D”, have only yielded 14.8 points per game this season and should take care of a Bengals team that not only couldn’t beat Carolina, but gave up 37 points in that game to the ‘Cats.

Colts -3 over the STEELERS- Short week for the Steelers who played on Monday and enjoyed a big win. Although on paper this sounds like a highly competitive game, the loss of Trent Richardson and possibly Reggie Wayne won’t help Indianapolis but Andrew Luck just continues to find  ways to win with his favorite receiver T.Y. Hilton.
