5 Waiver Wire Pickups…One ‘Must Add’

With just two weeks to go in the fantasy basketball regular season, it’s a time to solidify your line-ups, strengthen your bench, and pick up players who have categories that you might be lacking on your team…

1. Rodrigue Beaubois-PG/SG-Mavs- 39 year old Jason Kidd’s back up at the one makes for a nifty pickup not only because his numbers over the past 4 games have been more than adequate, but in case of any setback or injury to Kidd, the understudy makes for an excellent replacement. In just 20+ minutes per game he has averaged 13.8 points, 1.5 three, and 2.0 steals a game. He is currently owned in around 25% of leagues.

2. Ekpe Udoh-PF/C-Warriors- At the end of last week, coach Mark Jackson anointed Udoh as the starting center for the Warrriors for the rest of the season; (barring any major let downs, of course). In his last four games he has averaged 9.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in nearly 28 minutes per game. Recommended for leagues of 12 or more teams he can be utilized as a streamer while you are juggling for playoff spots. He’s owned in just 22% of most leagues.

3. Alonzo Gee-SG/SF-Cavs- Gee is on fire! On Wednesday vs Denver he dropped 19 points, had 7 boards, 3 assists, and copped 4 steals! He has now had 3 straight double-digit games. In his last four he’s averaged 12.8 points, 5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.3 treys, so he is quite capable of filling out a stat sheet.  He’s averaging around 31 mpg and amazingly, he’s owned in only 15% of leagues. Really? What are you waiting for?

4. ZaZa Pachulia-C-Hawks- It seems that every year, just about this time too, Zaza, a rebounding machine, is available in most leagues. Well, just in time for the playoffs, Pachulia is averaging almost 10 points and 10 rebounds per game over his last 4 on 33:45 MPG. He’s had 2 double-doubles in his last three including his 10/14 he posted in Saturday’s win over the Thunder. He is currently owned in 25 % of most leagues and could help out with boards if you need him.

5. Trevor Booker-PF-Wizards- “A Must Add” This is not the first time we’ve recommended Booker as a waiver pickup, only now he has been classified as a must add in all leagues. He has scored 68 points and 51 rebounds in his last 5 games and averages less than 1 turnover per game. He’s played 31 mpg over his last 3 and has become a workhorse for the Wizards. In their win vs the Lakers on Wednesday Booker turned in a 18/17 performance that is simply Dwight ‘Howardesque’. He’s only owned in 28% of Yahoo! leagues. Stop reading this and run to your league ‘players’ page and pick this stud up!!

Five pickups readily available in most leagues…

1. TREVOR BOOKER-PF-Wizards- For those of you shaking your heads, even bad teams have fantasy relevant players. Booker is one such person. He seems to have been given the starting nod again and didn’t disappoint. On Monday, playing his most minutes in a game all season, 43, the 1st round pick of the Timberwolves out of Clemson, scored 19 points. He had just 4 boards but also contributed with 3 steals and 3 blocks. He’s owned in just under 20% of most leagues.

2. NIKOLA PEKOVIC-C-Timberwolves- The 6′ 11″ 290 lb. beast of a center has been tearing it up of late. In his last four games, he’s averaged around 32 minutes a game and started on Saturday vs the Rockets and again on Tuesday vs the Kings. The start coming as Kevin Love sits out his 2 game suspension for stomping on the face & upper body of Louis Scola. In those last four Pekovic has averaged 18.5 points and almost 11 rebounds. Why this 1st pick in the 2nd round of the 2008 draft is still available in 70 % of leagues is a head scratcher.

3. ALONZO GEE-SG/SF-Cavaliers- In his first start at SG this season on Tuesday vs the Heat, Gee poured in 17 points on 6-11 shooting and added 1 three, 1 block, and 2 steals. In his last five games he’s averaged 14.8 points, 1.7 threes, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in 30 minutes per game. Gee, in his third year out of Alabama, has scored in double digits in all of his last five. He is only owned in 13% of Yahoo! leagues alone and if you’re in need of threes, steals, and points, we recommend picking him up in 12 team leagues.

4. JORDAN CRAWFORD-PG/SG-Wizards- Yes, another Wizards player…Crawford has come on over the last six games scoring in double-digits in all of them. He won’t fill a stat sheet all the way up, but he will give you points (almost 14 in his last 4 games), threes (7 in his last  4 games), and steals (he averages about a steal per game). He backs up SG Nick Young and will come in and play the one behind John Wall as well. You should take a flier out on him to replace a player or use him for streaming on those barren Monday and Thursday night schedules.. Owned currently in around 24% of leagues.

5. CHRIS KAMAN-PF/C-Hornets- With Jason Smith (concussion) and Carl Landry (knee) both out, Kaman will see an increase in his minutes so this could be the perfect time to pick up the veteran. He’s been on the trading block for a while and seems ready to go back to work as he scored a double-double on Monday with 10 points, 12 boards, and 2 blocks in just 22 minutes on the floor. We recommend you take a flier on him for the moment and watch and see if those type of numbers stay consistent. Available in about half of Yahoo! leagues.

 PLAYERS TO WATCH…

 IVAN JOHNSON-PF/C-HAWKS- He’s had a double-double in two of his last three games. He’ll play again on Wednesday.

 RANDY FOYE-PG/SG-Clippers- In the wake of Chauncey Billups’ season ending injury (Achilles), Foye will be the starting shooting guard and will be part of a three guard alignment which will include Chris Paul and Mo Williams. Foye has started six games on the year, averaging 10.7 points, 4.3 assists, 2.0 3-pointers and 1.8 steals in 32.5 minutes.

Five pickups readily available in most leagues…

1. Greg Stiemsma-C-Celtics- Starting center Jermaine O’Neal left the Wizards game on New Year’s Day with a tight hammy and given his propensity towards injury, backup rookie center Greg Stiemsma not only has the opportunity to start in his absence, but could end up getting 20-25 minutes a game even when O’Neal returns.  In his first start on Monday in the second home at home game vs the Wizards, Stiemsma played 21 minutes and put up 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 assists. O’Neal is in his 17th season in the NBA and in the last 4 years he has missed 123 games. Stiemsma, already a Celtic ‘fan favorite’ is available in 100% of Yahoo! leagues and should be rostered if you have the room.

2. N0rris Cole-PG-Heat- This 1st round pick of the Bulls in last year’s draft has been sharing the point guard duties with Mario Chalmers but has outplayed him, scoring in double digits in four of the Heat’s six games; 20 vs the Celtics. He also turns the ball over decidedly less than Chalmers and drives in the paint more aggressively going to the line much more frequently than Chalmers. He’s available in 80% of Yahoo! leagues and is worth taking a flier on.

3. MarShon Brooks-SG-Nets- Astoundingly, this rookie 1st round pick of the Celtics out of Providence, is still widely available in 70% of Yahoo! leagues. Coach Avery Johnson has already locked him up as the starter at the 2 playing in the same backcourt with Deron Williams. He is continuing where he left off at Providence where he was a lethal shooter. In his last five games, he’s averaging 15.2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 three, and just ONE turnover. There is a tremendous upside to this rookie and should be grabbed in all leagues as Brooks will only get better.

4. Alonzo Gee-SG/SF-Cavs- Coach Byron Scott has been showcasing the 3rd year undrafted Gee over starter Omri Casspi and he’s gaining more & more confidence in him. At some point expect Scott to replace the Israeli first-rounder with Gee in the starting lineup as his numbers have been better. Gee has been averaging about 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.5  steals and one 3 in almost 29 mpg. Casspi in just 20 mpg is at 5.4/2.4/1.8. Gee can play the 2 or the 3 and is available in over 90% of Yahoo! leagues. Act quickly as that will change as he continues to progress.

5. Luke Ridnour-PG-Timberwolves- Although there is a bit of a logjam at the point guard position in Minnesota (J.J. Barea has been out with a strained hamstring), coach Rick Adelman likes the combo of Luke Ridnour and Ricky Rubio playing on the floor at the same time. The former 1st round pick of  Seattle in the ’03 draft has averaged just under 27 minutes a game with 11 points, 4 assists, and 1.2 threes. When Rubio is on the floor, Ridnour has moved over to the two and could eventually gain dual position eligibility. He has started every game this year and seems to be getting stronger. In his last two games, he’s put up 30 points and 12 assists. Available in 88% of Yahoo! leagues.
