(VIDEO): We just might have witnessed the ‘absolute’ worst free throw attempt in the history of college basketball!
With 11:07 left in the second half of Saturday afternoon’s game between the Mountaineers and Western Carolina, #24, center Brian Okam of Appalachian State, attempted the second of two foul shots to try to extend his team’s lead to 10. Perhaps the ball slipped out of his hand, but it sailed high in the air and fell about 10 feet short of the rim, leaving the Western Carolina TV analyst calling the game in such shock he aptly exclaimed, “I’m not sure what that was. Good lord.”
Okam, a Rutgers transfer averaging 2.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, seldom reaches the foul line. Prior to going 1 of 4 on free throws against Western Carolina, he was just 3 of 5 from the foul line in his two-year Appalachian State career! I guess that’s why this free throw went straight up and landed in the arms of his teammate instead of coming down anywhere near the rim…
It was probably harder for Okam to laugh about his gaffe. The miss sparked the late run that propelled Western Carolina to a 70-64 victory.
I could’ve done that WITHOUT benefit of a college baller paycheck!

This kid just goes to prove that….drumroll por favor…..The best things in life ARE free . . throws.
Hey, I gave it a shot. And, as it turns out….I STILL got closer to the net than he did.

Looks like the very first free throw I tried in high school! However, my first FT as a Varsity player was a high-arching, all net, job which gave the cheer leaders something to, well, “cheer” about! We were down by 30 points against the Divisional Champs and it was one of the best shots of the night, if I say so myself…
Good luck with your picks, my friend!

Well, since we’re laying all of our cards on the table, my first freet throw shot was in elementary school..underhanded! How embarassing!

Hey, Don Nelson and Bill Russell shot underhanded FT’s in the NBA. No shame as long as they go in! Now the only underhanded throws being made come from our government…
