…and then there were two. With the fantasy baseball season down to two weeks on Monday, this would be the ideal time to insure that your team is in the best position to make it through to the playoffs, especially if you find yourself on the fence. There is still time to make adjustments so take advantage of the following waiver wire pickups readily available in most leagues…
Coco Crisp-OF-Athletics- This speed merchant, now entering his 11th season in the majors, is just one year removed from reaching his career mark in steals for a season with 49. Going into Friday, his steal total this season stands at 28 and climbing. More importantly, he’s been on a tear over the past two weeks with 12 runs scored, 3 homers, 10 RBIs and 4 steals. Over his last 6 games he is batting an even .300. Crisp is batting a pedestrian .254 on the season but that will likely rise as his career BA is a more respectable .274. Owned in 40% of leagues, if you’re lacking in SB, you should be ‘cuckoo for Coco Crisp!’
David Murphy-OF-Rangers- Murph won’t get your team too much in the way of stats, but if your team is lacking in batting average, then look no further because he is on fire! With 14 hits in his last 26 at bats, Murphy has raised his batting average from .295 to .312. He has some power, 11 home runs on the season and will even give you an occasional steal (8 this year). Recommended in deeper and A.L. only leagues, Murphy is widely available in around 75% of leagues.
John Laso-C-Mariners- Although sharing time behind home plate with Miguel Olivo, Laso clearly has been the better all around catcher for the Mariners and has been rewarded with more playing time of late, and well deserved as he has 5 homers, 19 RBI’s, and a .329 batting average since the All-Star break. Going into Friday’s game he has reached base in 25 consecutive games since the break. In his last 10 games, Laso has been ranked 42nd in Yahoo! leagues with his 3 HRs and 10 RBI’s. He is only owned in around 15% of leagues and if you’re in a 2 catcher league he’s a must add. If not, then grab him in deeper leagues. You could do a lot worse at the catcher position.
Matt Harvey-SP-Mets- This mid-season call up has impressed and even exceeded all expectations. In his first six starts he collected 43 strikeouts, a franchise record and just one more than Nolan Ryan’s 42. Over his last three games, he has struck out 20 in 19 2/3 innings, one win, and has an All-Star like 1.83 ERA to go along with a 0.86 WHIP. Not much more can be asked of the 3rd round draft pick of the Los Angeles Angels. He’s owned in 35% of leagues and is a must add in all formats.
Kris Medlen-SP,RP-Braves- Since joing the Braves’ rotation on July 31st, Medlen has started five games and won four of them! Like Harvey, Medlen has had great control striking out 29 and walking only 5 during that stretch. Now in his fourth year in the majors, all with Atlanta, the 27 year old has amassed 222 strikeouts and only 69 walks as both a starter and reliever. That is one outstanding K/BB ratio! He’ll face San Diego and Philadelphia in his next two starts and makes for an excellent streamer candidate and a must own in 12+ leagues. He is the 8th ranked pitcher over the past two weeks and is available in over 40% of leagues. Run, don’t walk and grab him off of waivers if available in your league.
