Boston Red Sox catcher, Kelly Shoppach had a lot going on for himself in the Red Sox home opener last week versus the Tamp Bay Rays. He caught a brilliant game from SP Josh Beckett, 1 run in 8 innings in a 12-2 win- for starters. On offense, the former Tampa Bay catcher for the last two seasons, went 3-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
And as our Best Stat nominee, Shoppach is now 1-1 in stolen bases. One steal, one attempt, in 446 games, a feat that even broke a MLB record held since 2005 for the amount of games played without an attempted steal. (They have records in baseball for just about everything, don’t they?) Unfortunately, his ‘steal’ of second base could possibly be the worst looking steal ever made since Nelson Doubleday had visions of creating the sport of baseball over a century ago!!
*Please excuse the poor quality in this home made video although you will still be able to capture the essence of one of the world’s worst steals, ever.
When he was with the Rays he was notorious for letting his bat go into the crowd. Glad he found a new point of reference.

I saw one of those games. I want to say it was against the Yankees. I don’t know what’s scarier-Shoppach losing his bat or ‘trying’ to steal…
Thanks Karen!

That’s funny. What a terrible slide, he was a good few feet away from the base after he came up! I wonder how hard his teammates were laughing in the dugout…

It was too funny…I’m sure he got some ribbing from his teammates and more importantly, one would tend to doubt he will be attempting any more steals in the near or distant future.
Thanks for the comment!

This is great! It’s funny that such a terrible
Base-stealer can be 100%!

Let’s just hope he remains at 1 for 1.
