Maurice Jones-Drew

We finished week #11 going a cool 5-0 thus making our season record a very respectable 37-18. Looking to continue the streak, here are our Five Best Bets Picks for this week. Good luck to all the fantasy owners out there and enjoy the games and the holiday weekend…

All of us here at Fantasy Furnace want to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the games this holiday weekend…

BENGALS over the Raiders- This will prove to be a ‘homecoming’ of sorts for Ex-Bengals quarterback Carson “The Quitter” Palmer and he will go out of his way to show up his old team even though he was the one to give up on them. On the other hand, you would think that the Bengals would go out of their way to contain Palmer as much as they could. The Raiders have lost their last three games, giving up 135 points in the process. Their 3-7 record looks even worse when you consider that 2 of their 3 wins were against the Jaguars and the Chiefs. Andy Dalton and A.J. Green and a pretty good defense will be too much for Palmer and the sliver & black.

Colts over the Bills- The Colts, winners of four of their last five, have had three ‘clunkers’ this season where they just forgot how to play defense. They lost by 20 to the Bears, 26 to the Jets, and 35 to the Patriots last week. They’re 6-4 and still very much alive in the wild card race and can ill-afford to lose to the lowly Bills. Buffalo has given up 35 or more points in 6 of their 10 games this year and will be served a large plate of Andrew Luck this Thanksgiving weekend. Pass the Tums…

Seahawks over the DOLPHINS- This pick won’t sit well with my dear friend and huge Dolphin fan Cayman, but honestly we just haven’t had much luck when we DO pick the Fish. Case in point was 2 weeks ago when they were going up vs the Titans. They lost by 34!!! Miami is now riding a 3-game losing streak and going up against the team with the longest trip in the NFL, will not help them. The Seahawks defense has been stellar and ranks in the top five in the league. QB Russell Wilson has one of the best featured backs in the NFL at his disposal in Marshawn Lynch and together with their ‘D’ they should get their 7th win on Sunday.

JAGUARS over the Titans- With Blaine Gabbert sitting this one out, his replacement, veteran Chad Henne, who tore it up last week with 354 passing yards and 4 touchdowns gets the starting nod. WR Justin Blackmon had a breakout game vs the Houston Texans collecting 236 receiving yards and a touchdown. Maurice Jones-Drew will be returning-but not until week #13. Keep an eye on this week’s starter Jalen Parmele who coach Mike Mularkey said will take Rahad Jennings place as Jones-Drew’s backup this week. He ran for 80 yards vs the Texans last week and should have an easier time against the Titans who give up the most fantasy points to RB’s in the league.

BUCCANEERS over the Falcons- Tough game to call. We’re giving the edge to the Bucs because of two reasons: First they have scored 27 or more points in their last six in a row and have won their last four so they’re surging at the right time. They lost by just a TD to the Super Bowl Champion Giants and the high powered New Orleans Saints so they can keep up with the best of them. Second, the Falcons exposed themselves last week by just eking out a win over the Cardinals. Against lower to mid tiered teams they have not played like a 9-1 team. Examples; they won by 2 over the Panthers, by 3 over the Raiders, 6 over the Cowboys and 4 over the Cards. If it’s close in this contest, the Falcons have the offense (Martin, Jackson, Freeman, etc..) to secure a home field win over on of the league’s more elite teams.

As we surmised there were a fair amount of upsets last week and two of them helped to do us in; the Bills over the Cards and G.B over the Texans. We went 2-3 for the week but came close to going 1-4 as the Raiders made it very interesting in Atlanta. At 19-11 on the season we need a good week to return us to respectablity. Here are our five best bets for week #7:

*Home team in CAPS

GIANTS over the Redskins- It took six games for the mighty Giants defense to show up and after their brilliant performance in San Fransisco last Sunday we think it will carry over into this week’s divisional contest with the Redskins. We might not see the six sacks and three interceptions that did the 49ers in last week when Washington comes to East Rutherford because they are more of a ground & pound team with Alfred Morris & RGIII leading the way. Eli & his receivers are salavating at the ‘Skins lack of defense which yields an average of 417 yards to opposing offenses per game. They also have a bit of a ‘revenge’ factor going into this game as the Redskins did beat the Giants in both of their meetings last year. Giants are 4-2 but are 0-2 in their division and need this one.

RAIDERS over the Jags- After nearly pulling out what would have been the biggest upset of the week, the Raiders return to the Black Hole knowing that if they almost beat the undefeated Falcons on the road they certainly should have an easier time with the anemic Jags in their building. The Raiders defense will shine this week as they will face QB Blaine Gabbert who has been sacked 15 times this season and has thrown for 200 yards only once. Outside of RB Maurice Jones-Drew, there is little to get excited about as WR Justin Blackmon, the Jags 1st round pick, has yet to live up to the hype entering this season. The Silver & Black should romp in this one.

PATRIOTS over the Jets- The Jets lost both of their games against the Pats last year; one by 11 points and the other by 21 and their team is no better now than they were in ’11. Beleagured QB Mark Sanchez has averaged 12.6 completions over his last three games while in contrast, Tom Brady’s average is 27. Sanchez has thrown six picks and been sacked 10 times as his offensive line continues to struggle. Don’t be suckered into believing that they have turned things around as they beat a Colts team last week with a rookie quarterback and without their starting RB on the field. Can’t see the Jets and their lack of offense overtake New England at home with their many weapons.

BILLS over the Titans- In what could possibly be the highest scoring game of the day, we’re leaning towards the Bills. Neither team knows the concept of the word ‘defense’ so it could come down to the last team with the ball wins.. Discounting the last two weeks when the Bills played two of the leagues better defenses Arizona & S.F., QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 12 touchdown passes in the first four games! They have beaten Arizona, Cleveland (the best 1-5 team in the league) and blew out Kansas City at Orchard Park. RB Chris Johnson should have a career day but the Titans defense, which is ranked 25th in the league, will probably go up after this week.

BENGALS over the Steelers-Pittsburgh is having all kinds of injury issues; the worst is that Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman both have been ruled OUT for Sunday night’s game. They have several defensive injuries as well and Maurkice Pouncey, their center remains Questionable. That would be a big loss to their offensive line if Pouncey cannot suit up. At RB, Jonathan Dwyer, who played in just three games last year and has only 24 rushing attempts so far this season, is not going to scare anyone on the Bengals this week. If you look at the Steelers losses this season, to Denver, Oakland, & Tennessee, you would have to scratch your head wondering how this team, now at 2-3, has fallen from grace so rapidly. Clearly the Bengals are a step up in class but QB Andy Dalton needs to cut down on his interceptions (he has 6 in the last three games), if they are to be successful this week.

One need only look at the injury riddled year it was for running backs in 2011 to see how handcuffing a backup could save your season. Just look at the names of some of the backs that suffered an injury which in most cases required surgery:

#25 RB Jamaal Charles is carted off the field after blowing out his knee vs the Lions in Detroit on Sept. 18, 2011. Photographer: Dave Reginek/Getty Images

  1. Jamaal Charles-Chiefs- Torn left ACL
  2. Adrian Peterson-Vikings- Torn left ACL; Meniscus Damage
  3. Rashard Mendenhall-Steelers- Torn right ACL
  4. Jahvid Best-Lions- Multiple concussions (missed 10 games in 2011)
  5. Beanie Wells-Cardinals- Right knee surgery
  6. Knowshon Moreno-Broncos- Torn right ACL
  7. Mark Ingram-Saints- Turf toe; Knee injury (played in only 10 games in 2011)

Consider this; how many times does a QB get hit or sacked in a game? How many times does a wideout get tackled in a game? And then, how many times does a featured back get tackled in a game? Clearly the RB gets the most hits because he controls the ball longer and gets the most carries of anyone on the team. The QB, of course handles the ball on every play but he has protection from his linemen and does not hold  it for any length of time. So with this scenario it’s logical that the RB will suffer the most injuries of any player on the field.

What we’re recommending is that you handcuff a featured back with his backup at some point during the season if you see that they’re available on waivers. Or if your league offers a greater amount of bench players, then you would benefit greatly if you can stash one safely in case your back misses any time. Production lost when you lose a RB to injury can have a tremendous impact on your team.

  • We’ve put together eight backups to the top featured backs for you to consider and at least have with you when you draft. (We did not list RB Toby Gerhart, Adrian Peterson’s backup because he is coming off of a knee injury (sprained MCL) suffered in week 17 last season and although he’ll fill in for Peterson should he start the season on the PUP, we’re not that high on him)

*There have been some reports that Mike Goodson would be McFadden’s backup but Jones is more likely to get the nod.

Hopefully you won’t have the need to employ the services of these backups, but isn’t it nice to know that they’re there  in case you do? Consider them as an insurance policy…
