We’re coming down the home stretch now as fantasy leagues are in their last 30% of the regular season. It is still vital that you keep your ‘eye on the prize’, and one way to do that is to continue to pick up valuable waiver-wire pieces that are widely available. And that’s what you will always find here at Fantasy Furnace!

1. Justin Ruggiano-OF-Marlins- Here for starters is one of the hottest hitters in the league over the last two weeks and he is available in 75% of leagues. If you’re wondering what to do now that Giancarlo Staton has succumbed to right knee surgery (he’ll be on the DL for 4-6 weeks), take a look at Rugiano. Through 90 AB’s in a limited role, he has collected 6 HR, 17 RBI, and scored 15 runs to go along with outstanding batting percentages: .378 BA-.722 SLG- and 1.169 OPS. He also stole 3 of his 6 bases last Friday vs the Nats! Ranked 9th in Yahoo! leagues over the past 14 days, Ruggiano is a ‘Must Add’ in mixed leagues.

2. Michael Brantley-OF-Indians- Almost as explosive as Ruggiano, Brantley the 25 year old undrafted outfielder is ranked 10th in Yahoo! leagues overall over the past 14 days. 2012 is slowly shaping up to be Brantley’s breakout season. He currently in on a modest 13 game hitting streak with 7 multi-hit games during that stretch. He won’t bring much power to your team (he has 4 HR all season), but his .302 BA , 27 doubles, and 10 SB will come in handy for some owners out there. He is only owned in 33% of leagues.

3. Carlos Villanueva ,RP-Blue Jays-Given all the Blue Jays injuries to their rotation, Villanueva has been a breath of fresh air as he currently owns the starting five’s best ERA , .268. Since joining the rotation he has started three games, going 2-0 with a miniscule 1.59 ERA, 21 K’s and just 6 BB’s. He is a must add in mixed leagues and can even be garnered by you streamers out there. (He faces the Boston Red Sox on Saturday). Owned in only 10% of leagues, we recommend that you take a flier out on him.

4. Dayan Viciedo-OF-White Sox- We were surprised to see that this 23 year old undrafted power hitter is only owned in 29% of leagues. Playing in his first full season with the White Sox, manager Robin Ventura gets some of the credit for the youngster’s success as he was responsible for keeping him inserted on the lineup card even when he was struggling earlier in the season. Over the past 14 days, Viciedo is batting .324 (11-34). Very quietly he is on pace to finish the season with 28 HR’s-75 RBI’s and 80 Runs scored.

5. Francisco Liriano-SP,RP-Twins- This veteran southpaw has clearly had his ups and downs over his career since originally being signed by the S.F. Giants in 2000. As it appears that he will be traded to the Angels prior to the July 31st deadline, his value automatically rises. As you have probably heard by now, Liriano had one of his best games of the season last Friday vs the Athletics when he struck out 15 in a 6-3 losing effort. The 15 K’s are the 2nd most in Twins history since Johan Santana’s 17 K’s in August of 2007.

Over Liriano’s last 9 games, 6 were ‘quality starts’ as he lowered his already high ERA down from 7.20 to 4.93. He had 5 or more K’s in every game  and 8 or more in three of them. The 28 year old has been gearing it up in anticipation of his ‘probable trade. Owned in 44% of leagues, he’s a good speculative mixed league pickup and graded “A” for streamers.

#47 Francisco Liriano, picking it up of late, has been labeled with the word Enigma throughout his career but if traded to the Angels could see a boost to his career and confidence. Photo: yankeeanalysts,.com

I’ve got GOOD news and BAD news…

NYY 22-9 over Oakland

the Good news…The Yanks had an offensive outburst of ‘historic’ proportions when Cano, Martin, and Granderson all hit Grand Slams which accounted for 16 RBIs between them. It’s the first time it’s been done in major league history!

the Bad news…Phil Hughes imploded giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits in just 2- 2/3 innings. He had three quality starts this month prior to today’s game, but still has an inflated 6.46 ERA.

Detroit 2-0 over T.B.

the Good news…Doug Fister, probably the best 6-13 pitcher in all of baseball, won on a 5 hitter vs. T.B. His K/BB is now an amazing 106/34.

the Bad news…Jeremy Hellickson, in just his 2nd year in the majors, has put together a nice 15-8 record thus far. He struck out 7 in 7 strong innings but took the loss giving up just 2 earned runs.

Baltimore 6-1 over Minn.

the Good news…Mark Reynolds hit his 29th hr which is just around his average over almost 6 yrs. in the major leagues; five with Arizona. Now if he could just get his batting average above his weight- (.220)!!

the Bad news…Francisco Liriano was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained left shoulder after only 2 innings today. He’ll take his bloated 4.84 era with him…

Atlanta 8-3 over Chicago

the Good news…Michael Bourn went 4-5 and upped his batting average to .304. Brian McCann hit his 21st and 22nd hrs. He now has 4 hrs. since returning from the DL about a month ago.

the Bad news…The ‘Bad News’ Cubbies had four errors in today’s game vs. the Braves. They now have committed 108 errors on the season-the most in the majors!

From ‘Studs’ to ‘Duds’…part 2

6) Carl Crawford-OF-Red Sox- In the dictionary under the word Bust, you will probably find Crawford’s picture! His line; 49/8/40-.251 BA, and still in 97% of Yahoo! leagues! I’m sure when he was drafted in Fantasy leagues at the start of the season, his career .293 BA, & his 117 SB’s in the last 2 years were a factor. He not only has 17 so far, but he has been relegated to the 7th hole in the batting order! Not what the Red Sox had in mind when they paid him all that money…

7) Francisco Liriano-SP-Twins- Liriano, currently ranked 848 in Yahho! leagues, is another big disappointment. A 14 game winner a year ago with 200 K’s and a 3.62 ERA/1.26 WHIP, he has seen his ERA rise to just under 5 (at 4.85), while his WHIP is at 1.45. In just 23 starts this year, Liriano has walked more batters than in any year in his career!

8) Delmon Young-OF-Tigers-  Young’s move from Minnesota to Detroit has helped his stats a little, but coming off a 77/21/112-.298 season last year, you would think he would be doing better than 29/6/38-.269. Still astounds me how almost half of Yahoo! leagues continue to roster this Dud…

9) Jonathan Sanchez-SP-Giants-  0Ranked at around 700 in Yahoo! leagues, this hard throwing left-hander has only 4 wins coming off his best season last year with 13W’s. In addition he had 200K’s an ERA at around 3, and a 1.23 WHIP. Compare that to his current #’s; 4-7 4.26/1.44, and you can understand why he’s a member of the bust club.

10) David Wright-3B-Mets- Wright has missed just about half of the season so while we won’t get completely down on him, he’s still classified as a Fantasy Bust. He’s batting a meager .255 while he sports a career BA of .301! Although his batting average has improved of late, Fantasy managers who drafted him early were anticipating at least 30 hrs.-since he’s hit that many in 3 of the last 4 seasons..
