‘The Magnificent Seven’

1-Curtis Granderson-OF-Yankees- You just can’t say enough about Granderson’s season. Coming into today’s double header vs. Baltimore, he leads the majors with 103 RBI’s, 119 runs scored, 36 hrs., and is among the league leaders in total bases, triples, and slug. %. Clearly a leading candidate for MVP honors in the American League. Last year, his 1st with the Yanks, he batted 30 points lower, had 12 less hrs., 43 less runs scored, and 36 less RBI’s. Even his SB’s are doubled what they were last year. He’s our ‘Most improved’ player of 2011!

2-Lance Berkman-1B/OF-Cardinals-Another one of our ‘much improved’, Berkman had a line last year that reads- 48/14/58 .248. All of his categories have shot up significantly to 70/30/81 .290. Even his Yahoo! ranking went from 443 last year to a current 39!  He’s had some health issues the last three years but continues to produce even though he’s been with 3 teams in the last 2 years and will turn 36 next just before next season starts.

3-Melky Cabrera-OF-Royals- Bit of a surprise here, but Melky was a sleeper for sure this year. He improved in virtually every category as witnessed by these stats: 2010- 50/4/42/ 7 SB .255  2011- 79/17/76 17 SB .284. The former undrafted Yankee was a bust in Atlanta last year and has certainly earned the right to make our most improved list going from his Yahoo! ranking of 693 last season to a more sleeper-like 24.

4-Justin Masterson-SP-Indians- With another 6 probable starts, Masterson has already almost doubled his Win total from 2010 with 10. Where the 26 year old- 2nd round pick of the Red Sox in 2006 has mostly improved and impressed, has been in his ERA; down to 2.83 from 4.70 and his WHIP currently at 1.19, down from last year’s 1.50.

5-Asdrubal Cabrera-SS-Indians- In his 5th year in the majors, all with Cleveland, Cabrera has more home runs so far this year than in all of his previous four…combined! His runs scored-78, RBI’s-78, and SB’s-16, are all more than doubled those of last season. Another sneaky sleeper, he could improve on these numbers even more in the 23 games that still remain, and be poised to move up the charts in next year’s draft.

6-Jamie Shields-SP-Rays- He’s another pitcher on our most improved list that has drastically lowered his ERA and WHIP from 5.18 to 2.96 and 1.46 to 1.05. What makes these numbers even more impressive is the fact that he has had five games where he’s given up 5 or more runs this year, including the 10 vs. Oakland on July 27th! He should finish with more wins this campaign as well, as he’s got one less ‘W’ than last year but still has at least 6 more starts.

7-Alex Gordon-3B/OF-Royals- Vastly improved, Gordon has already hit his career highs in BA .298, runs scored 71, RBI’s 84 and hrs. 18, and he still has 80-90 more AB’s this season. He’s finally lived up to all the hype surrounding him when he was the 1st round-2nd pick of the Royals back in 2005. With his 2-position eligibility, and now his increasingly stellar numbers, he too will be higher on your cheat sheets when you draft in 2012.

Are Tim & Reggie Right For Your League?

TIM HIGHTOWER-RB-REDSKINS- He has been tearing it up in the pre-season. In the Redskins three games so far, the 2008 5th round pick has averaged 6.8 yds. per carry. He has 114 yards on 16 carries and a TD as well as 2 catches for 15. Hightower is just 25 years old and has played in all 48 games his first 3 seasons in the NFL- so we know he’s durable.  Watch him here as he scampers 37 yards for a TD vs the Ravens.

With Ryan Torian recovering from a broken hand, and rookie Roy Helu on board, and knowing Shanahan, we could very well see a committe-like backfield. However, given Hightower’s work ethics this pre-season (he’s been staying up to 45 minutes after practices), and his performance so far, he’ll be the featured back you’ll want to grab after the 1st tier of backs have been scooped up. The Redskins who are debating which of their two competing QB’s will start, (between Rex Grossman & John Beck; neither fantasy studs..), make it likely that their running game will be a mainstay of their offense. Currently, Hightower is going 118.9 in Yahoo! ADP, way too late for his potential upside.

REGGIE BUSH-RB-DOLPHINS- The 5-year back out of USC is a real conundrum. Following his first year in the NFL in which he played all 16 games, he missed 20 games over the next 4 seasons! That Bush is injury prone is an understatement. The 2006 1st round draft pick, when healthy, can rack up those fantasy points with the best of them. Watch him tear it up in a pre-season game vs. the Panthers:

Part of his upside will come when Chad Henne connects on swing passes with him; when all other options have dissipated. Remember that Reggie averaged 80 catches in his first two seasons with the Saints and so all those in PPR leagues could find a true sleeper in Bush this year. Keep in mind he’s only 26 and once again, if healthy he could pay off big-time.

I’ve got GOOD news and BAD news…

NYY 22-9 over Oakland

the Good news…The Yanks had an offensive outburst of ‘historic’ proportions when Cano, Martin, and Granderson all hit Grand Slams which accounted for 16 RBIs between them. It’s the first time it’s been done in major league history!

the Bad news…Phil Hughes imploded giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits in just 2- 2/3 innings. He had three quality starts this month prior to today’s game, but still has an inflated 6.46 ERA.

Detroit 2-0 over T.B.

the Good news…Doug Fister, probably the best 6-13 pitcher in all of baseball, won on a 5 hitter vs. T.B. His K/BB is now an amazing 106/34.

the Bad news…Jeremy Hellickson, in just his 2nd year in the majors, has put together a nice 15-8 record thus far. He struck out 7 in 7 strong innings but took the loss giving up just 2 earned runs.

Baltimore 6-1 over Minn.

the Good news…Mark Reynolds hit his 29th hr which is just around his average over almost 6 yrs. in the major leagues; five with Arizona. Now if he could just get his batting average above his weight- (.220)!!

the Bad news…Francisco Liriano was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained left shoulder after only 2 innings today. He’ll take his bloated 4.84 era with him…

Atlanta 8-3 over Chicago

the Good news…Michael Bourn went 4-5 and upped his batting average to .304. Brian McCann hit his 21st and 22nd hrs. He now has 4 hrs. since returning from the DL about a month ago.

the Bad news…The ‘Bad News’ Cubbies had four errors in today’s game vs. the Braves. They now have committed 108 errors on the season-the most in the majors!
